Trump Hits 7-Year High In Favorability Ratings: How Republicans, Democrats, Men And Women View President-Elect

Zinger Key Points
  • A new poll found that voters are more supportive of Donald Trump than they were before the 2024 election.
  • Trump's net favorability hits a seven-year high in the latest poll.

Voters view President-elect Donald Trump more favorably in the weeks following his 2024 election victory, a contrast to the often negative net favorability ratings he held throughout the presidential campaign.

What Happened: Trump had a net favorability rating of negative seven ahead of the 2024 presidential election, calculated as the percentage of voters with a favorable view of the president-elect minus those with an unfavorable view.

In the month since the 2024 election ended, Trump's net favorability rating has grown to +3. This marks his highest net favorability in a Morning Consult poll since April 2017. Trump's net favorability as a president, president-elect or candidate for president has only been higher in the month of March 2017.

Here's a look at how Trump's net favorability ratings compare today versus the pre-2024 election figures across several voter groups, with the pre-election figures in parentheses:

  • All voters: 50% favorable/47% unfavorable, +3 net (45%/52%, -7 net)
  • Republicans: 88% favorable/11% unfavorable, +77 net (88%/11%, +77 net)
  • Democrats: 13% favorable/81% unfavorable, -68 net (10%/87%, -77% net)
  • Independents: 45% favorable/50% unfavorable, -5% net (36%/57%, -21% net)

For comparison, Trump also saw his net favorability ratings grow from the 2016 election to the period shortly after. Here are Trump's net favorability ratings before the 2016 election and in the month immediately after:

  • All voters: -6 after election (-24 pre-election)
  • Republicans: +71 after election (+47 pre-election)
  • Democrats: -68 after election (-79 pre-election)
  • Independents: -12 after election (-32 pre-election)

Trump's net favorable ratings are now higher across every voter group in the post-2024 period compared to both the pre-election period and the 2016 pre- and post-election periods.

Trump's net favorability for men, women, older voters and younger voters are also all higher than they were before the 2024 election. The voter demographics are all higher than the 2016 figures with the exception of the older voters, who have a -7 net favorability for Trump now, compared to -11 before the 2024 election and +3 after the 2016 election.

Why It's Important: The 2024 presidential election cycle saw Democratic candidate Kamala Harris post net favorability ratings higher than Trump. Before Harris became the party's candidate, current President Joe Biden often had higher net favorable ratings than Trump.

With Trump now the president-elect, it appears that more voters are beginning to view him more favorably than before the election and view him better than they did back in 2017.

Several business leaders, who have sometimes clashed with Trump, have donated to his inauguration fund and taken meetings with him in a potential show of recognition of working with him instead of fighting. The list includes Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and Sam Altman. Apple CEO Tim Cook also recently met with Trump, but neither he nor Apple has announced a donation to the inauguration fund.

Trump was recently named the TIME Person of the Year for 2024, the second time he has taken home the honor. The president-elect rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange as part of the award honors.

During the NYSE visit and event, Trump was joined by many business leaders in a scene that CNBC anchors said was unprecedented.

Based on the poll and recent events, it appears voters and business leaders are more supportive of Trump this time around.
