On Friday, AerCap Holdings N.V. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AER#NYSE">AER</a>) announced that it has entered into a sale and leaseback agreement with TAAG Angola Airlines for one new Boeing Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/n42457283/aercap-signs-lease-agreements-for-two-boeing-737-aircraft-with-aloula-aviation" rel="noreferrer noopener">787-9 aircraft</a>.
The aircraft is set to be delivered to TAAG in February 2025 as part of the airline's ongoing fleet modernization efforts.
This transaction marks a significant milestone, as AerCap becomes the first lessor to introduce the Boeing 787 to TAAG.
Aengus Kelly, CEO of AerCap, expressed enthusiasm about the new partnership, highlighting that the 787-9 will help TAAG expand its network across Africa, Europe, and Asia with one of the most fuel-efficient widebody aircraft available.
"As part of their fleet modernization program, the 787 will enable TAAG expand their network across&nbsp;Africa,&nbsp;Europe&nbsp;and&nbsp;Asia&nbsp;with one of the most fuel-efficient widebody aircraft on the market and support them in meeting customer demand," said Kelly.

The aircraft's advanced technology and efficiency will support TAAG's growth and improve its ability to meet increasing customer demand.

Earlier in December, AerCap signed lease agreements for two Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Mukamalah Aviation Company, a subsidiary of Aramco, will operate the aircraft to transport Aramco Group <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/n42457283/aercap-signs-lease-agreements-for-two-boeing-737-aircraft-with-aloula-aviation" rel="noreferrer noopener">passengers in Saudi Arabia.</a>

The airline industry has taken off in 2024, outpacing even the high-flying tech sector. The U.S. Global Jets ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JETS#NYSE">JETS</a>), a fund that tracks the airline sector, is up 34% year-to-date as of Dec. 27, compared to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech">Nasdaq 100's 27% gain.</a>
This surge reflects robust demand for premium travel, strategic operational shifts, and booming holiday traffic.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Travel Frenzy Lifts Airline ETF</h3>
Thanksgiving marked a pivotal moment for airline stocks this year. Over the six-day travel period, the TSA screened an estimated 18.3 million passengers—a 6% increase from 2023—pushing the JETS ETF up nearly 6% for November. 
"As a pure consumer play, JETS is a way for investors to capitalize on peak holiday travel, which is expected to see records this year," recently said Kent Thune, research analyst at ETF.com. 
The expert attributed the ETF's recent gains to declining fuel costs and strong seasonal demand. Since August, the JETS ETF has outperformed the tech-heavy Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) by robust 31 percentage points. 
JETS' portfolio is heavily weighted toward U.S. airlines with 70% stake, including a 10% weight in American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAL#NASDAQ">AAL</a>) and 8.5% in budget carrier Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LUV#NYSE">LUV</a>). The ETF also holds smaller positions in Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>), Expedia Group Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EXPE#NASDAQ">EXPE</a>), and TripAdvisor Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRIP#NASDAQ">TRIP</a>).
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Premium Demand Redefines Industry</h3>
Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DAL#NYSE">DAL</a>) and United Airlines Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAL#NASDAQ">UAL</a>), the second and fourth-largest U.S. carriers by market share, have been standout performers, surging 53% and 140% respectively this year. Together, they account for over 26% of JETS' holdings. 
Despite facing cost pressures from rising pilot salaries and maintenance expenses, the airlines have thrived thanks to booming demand for premium travel options. Delta recently revealed plans to expand high-end services, projecting premium ticket revenues will surpass main cabin sales—a trend reshaping the industry's profit dynamics.
"Premium revenue trends have outpaced main cabin over the last several years," Catharine O'Brien, an analyst at Goldman Sachs, said.
"Airlines have disaggregated premium demand to serve more segments of premium demand from premium economy seats in the main cabin to lie flat business class, with premium international economy and domestic first class in between,&#8221; she said. 
The analyst indicated that airlines with exposure to premium travel and strategic capacity improvements, including Delta, Alaska Air Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>), and United, are expected to outperform next year.

Goldman Sachs Reinstates Buy on AerCap Holdings, Announces $119 Price Target

Every quarter, I track the 13F filings at the SEC. These are the reports filed by money managers of all stripes that show what the funds owned during the most recent quarter. When you compare the current list to the prior quarter, you come away with a clear picture of what institutions are buying for their customers and themselves.
When I started in the business, it took several days past the deadline to get a copy of the filings. I would go through the current and previous filings with a ruler and a yellow highlighter to track the changes. It was laborious but profitable. Today, the filings are made available instantly, and the portfolios and changes are posted to the internet instantly.
The Thundering Herd of Wall Street and the Instant Experts of the Internet will flock to read the filings of the best-known money managers and investors. Obviously, Warren Buffett gets a lot of attention. So do Carl Icahn and Cathie Wood. Bill Ackman also garners some attention. The number of people who dig deeper to find managers that are doing business away from the spotlights and consistently delivering high returns is small.
The famous investors are famous because they did well over time. However, they now manage billions of dollars, and their opportunity set is limited to large-cap stocks. You can do okay with their stocks, but if you want better than okay, you have to dig deeper.
If you joined the circus of Buffettology and just owned the top 20 holdings of Berkshire Hathaway for the last 10 years, you have earned about half the return of the S&amp;P 500. You did much worse as an Icahn clone investor. A very small portion of Klarman&#8217;s fund is invested in stocks these days as he finds bargains in other asset classes like debt and real estate. The stocks Baupost Fund has purchased have not been big winners for the most part.
If you could make the same derivatives bets Bill Ackman made when he made them, you would have done pretty well. If you just bought the stocks he did, you would have lagged the indexes. If you bought the top 20 stocks held by Donald Smith and Company, you would have crushed the market over the last decade. You would have crushed the market for over 20 years cloning this unknown investment firm.
You would have never owned the most exciting stocks. About half the time, you would have trailed the index in a given calendar year. In the years you outperformed, you outperformed by a massive margin.
This approach is incredibly boring.
Donald Smith and Company focuses on the bottom 10% of the stock market as measured by price-to-book value. They narrow the universe down to the cheapest ones and buy the ones they think have the highest potential for recovery. They have done that for over 40 years with exceptional results. Elections, crashes, melt-ups, and meltdowns have come and gone, and this firm just keeps its head down and buys cheap stocks.
As it turns out, boring is profitable.
