The Chicago operation is part of a broader effort to beef up ICE in terms of resources and agents, as the Trump administration launches its nationwide crackdown toward fulfilling <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/01/43216758/well-go-as-far-as-im-allowed-trumps-plan-with-immigrants-starts-with-1-million-deportations">President Donald Trump&#8216;s vow</a> to deport one million people.  
"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with federal partners, including the FBI, ATF, DEA, CBP and the U.S. Marshals Service, began conducting enhanced targeted operations today in Chicago to enforce U.S. immigration law and preserve public safety and national security by keeping potentially dangerous criminal aliens out of our communities," the ICE <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/statement-us-immigration-and-customs-enforcement">statement</a> reads.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Dangerous Criminal Aliens? The Governor Begs To Differ</h2>
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/26/politics/video/sotu-pritzker-on-planned-chicago-immigration-raids">told CNN's Dana Bash on Sunday</a> that he too wants violent criminals out of the country, but he expressed concern about how the Trump administration is carrying out operations.
"If that's who they're picking up, we're all for it." But, Prizker said, &#8220;they're going after people who are law-abiding, who are holding down jobs, who have families here, who may have been here for a decade or two decades. Why are we going after them? These are not people who are causing problems in our country.&#8221;

The Chicago Police Department said in a statement to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/26/politics/chicago-immigration-trump-ice/index.html">CNN</a> it does not document immigration status, and in accordance with its "Welcoming City Ordinance," and that it "does not share information with federal immigration authorities." 
"We will not intervene or interfere with any other government agencies performing their duties," the Chicago PD statement reads.
Meanwhile, on Saturday U.S. Army troops patrolled Eagle Pass, Texas, reported CNN. following Trump's order to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/25/01/43219037/texas-gov-abbott-wants-11-billion-border-security-reimbursement-protecting-the-rest-of-america-was-expensive">deploy 1,500 additional soldiers</a> to the U.S.-Mexico border, raising the total to 4,000.

Bank of America (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>) has confirmed a data breach involving a third-party software provider that led to the exposure of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/11/35738108/unexpected-account-shutdowns-at-major-banks-lead-to-frustration-accusations-of-discrimination">sensitive customer data</a>.
What Happened: According to a <a href="https://www.maine.gov/agviewer/content/ag/985235c7-cb95-4be2-8792-a1252b4f8318/582166f7-27cd-44a1-8259-4ef444dafdf1.html">filing</a> earlier this month, an unidentified third-party software provider discovered unauthorized access to its systems in October. The breach did not directly impact Bank of America&#8217;s systems, but the data of at least 414 customers is now at risk.

Bank of America's Sensitive Customer Data Compromised in Third-Party Hack - Is Your Account Safe?

Sen. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/elizabeth-warren">Elizabeth Warren</a> (D-Mass.) sent a detailed letter to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>, chair of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/01/43182640/elizabeth-warren-lists-changes-for-elon-musks-doge-department-urges-guantanamo-closure-due-to-hundreds-of-millions-in-annual-costs">numerous suggestions</a> for slashing federal spending.
Warren outlined proposals she said could save the federal government upwards of $2 trillion over the next decade. Among her recommendations was scaling back federal enforcement against marijuana users and businesses, which she called an example of "wasteful spending."
"The United States could save hundreds of millions of dollars annually by cutting unnecessary federal enforcement actions and detention," Warren wrote in the <a href="https://www.warren.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/letter_to_doge_rerecommendationstosave2trillionoverthenext10years.pdf">Thursday letter</a> to the billionaire Tesla (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) CEO. 
Warren criticized federal agencies like the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/drug-enforcement-administration">Drug Enforcement Administration</a> (DEA) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for continuing to target legal marijuana businesses and seize cannabis plants. "These arrests and seizures unnecessarily drain federal resources," Warren said.

The renovation plans, drawn up on Nov. 25 and Dec. 4, 2024, expire on Dec. 4, 2025. A team of Rhode Island-based contractors led by David W. Shafovaloff will complete the work.

It's not as if Swift will be short of places to live while her Rhode Island home is under construction. According to Forbes, the 34-year-old global icon, worth $1.6 billion, has a sizable real estate portfolio. Other notable properties in her portfolio, as per Realtor.com, include two luxury Nashville homes – a luxury condo on Music Row and a Greek Revival-style mansion in the gated Northumberland Estate neighborhood. She has also steadily snapped up New York City properties for over a decade, primarily in the glitzy Tribeca neighborhood. Her first purchase was two penthouses for about $20 million. Swift combined them into a nine-bedroom, nine-bath luxury home with beamed ceilings, a curved staircase and oversize windows. A few years later, she purchased a third unit comprising 3,500 square feet in the same building for $9.75 million. Then, in 2017, she snagged an adjacent 5,000-square-foot town house for $18 million.
Swift isn't all East Coast. Abbott submitted a <a href="https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/press/Congressional_Leadership_and_Texas_Congressional_Members.pdf">detailed invoice</a> outlining the costs incurred by Operation Lone Star, which Texas undertook to &#8220;protect the rest of America&#8221; against Joe Biden&#8217;s &#8220;reckless open-border policies that invited record-breaking illegal immigration,&#8221; Abbott <a href="https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/press/Congressional_Leadership_and_Texas_Congressional_Members.pdf">wrote</a> in a letter to congressional leaders on Thursday.
He accused the former president of having stopped construction of the border wall and rewarding criminals who illegally entered the U.S. Biden halted construction of the border wall in 2021.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Building The Wall Is Back On</h2>
On the day of his inauguration, President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/donald-trump-border-wall-expansion-texas-greg-abbott-inauguration/">pledged</a> to get back to building the wall. &#8220;I wanted that sucker to go up 50, 60 feet, nice Y-shape. Beautiful. I love construction,&#8221; he said. 
Trump, who vowed to make immigration and border security a priority, spent a large part of his first week in office doing just that. On Thursday, the Defense Dept. announced that some of the 1,500 Army and Marines assigned to the border had arrived. On Friday, two cargo planes with&nbsp;people who migrated from Guatemala were sent out of the country, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/trump-spends-first-week-building-framework-mass-deportations-vow-rcna189124">reported</a> NBC News. Throughout the week, immigration officers launched raids in several cities.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Texas Protected Rest Of The Country: Time To Pay Up</h2>
Abbot said Biden's policies left Texas and the &#8220;rest of America defenseless against an unprecedented infiltration by violent criminals, known terrorists, and other hostile foreign actors" who smuggled weapons and drugs like fentanyl into the country.
But, he noted, while Operation Lone Star was combating these threats to all Americans, "this success came at a cost, which fell squarely on the shoulders of Texas taxpayers but should have been the federal government's responsibility." And Abbott would like Congress to pay up.

Meanwhile, a new bill recently filed in the Texas Senate would make it easier for new border wall segments to be built. Filed by state Sen. Social Security is hard to avoid in 2025. The news, dinner conversations and political debates are all centered on the same issue: running out of money. With the trust fund projected to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/11/42217382/bernie-sanders-demands-scrap-the-cap-on-social-security-taxes-its-absurd-a-billionaire-pays-same-amount-as-middle-class-earners">dry by 2035</a>, retirees could see their checks slashed by 17% if Congress doesn't act.&nbsp;
The anxiety is palpable. But 20 years ago, Charlie Munger, the late vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, already had plenty to say about Social Security – and his words are just as striking now as they were then.

Speaking at the 2005 Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting, Munger didn't hold back when addressing his own party's approach to Social Security. "The Republicans are out of their cotton-picking minds to be taking on this issue right now," he said, drawing applause and laughter from the audience. Munger was a self-described "right-wing Republican," but he wasn't afraid to criticize his party when he thought they were wrong. And on Social Security, he was adamant: the program wasn't the problem – tampering with it was.
"Social Security is very successful," Munger explained, calling it "one of the most successful things the government has ever done in terms of efficiency and good effects." Social Security, he pointed out, had remarkably low fraud rates, joking, "It's hard to fake being dead." Beyond the humor, his respect for the program ran deep.

For Munger, Social Security wasn't a handout but a cornerstone of American capitalism. "It's a reward for work," he said. "All kinds of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/07/39817447/warren-buffett-says-anyone-who-works-40-hours-a-week-should-live-a-decent-life-heres-what-he-pro">people are working in this country</a> because they want to eventually qualify for Social Security, just as many people are doing dangerous military service because they want the pension that will come eventually." He saw it as a system reinforcing the value of labor, giving millions of workers a reason to stay engaged in the economy.
Still, Munger wasn't naive about the program&#8217;s challenges as America aged. He anticipated the funding shortfalls we're now staring down. His solution? Practical and straightforward. "If the government runs out a little short of money as it gets more Social Security obligations, I see nothing wrong with having some consumption taxes or whatever to pay in a reasonable way for what is a very reasonable expenditure," he said.

Munger argued that as the country grew richer, allocating more of its GDP to Social Security wasn't a problem – it was logical. "If the country is going to get richer at one or two percent per annum for a long time ahead and it's going to have more old people who are living longer and spending money on medical care, the idea that eventually a higher share of GDP would be going through Social Security to retirees and so on than we now have is not anathema to me," he explained. To him, expanding Social Security's share of resources wasn't a crisis; it was a natural evolution for a wealthier and older society.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Pfizer Pays Nearly $60 Million To Resolve False Claims Allegations&nbsp;</h2>
The U.S. Department of Justice <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/pfizer-agrees-pay-nearly-60m-resolve-false-claims-allegations-relating-improper-physician">announced on</a> Friday that Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PFE#NYSE">PFE</a>), on behalf of its subsidiary Biohaven Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHVN#NYSE">BHVN</a>) (Biohaven), agreed to pay $59,746,277 to resolve allegations that Biohaven knowingly caused the submission of false claims to Medicare by paying kickbacks to health care providers to induce prescriptions of its drug Nurtec ODT.
The DOJ alleges that from March 1, 2020, through Sept. 30, 2022, Biohaven paid health care professionals, in the form of paid speaking appearances and expensive meals, to induce them to prescribe the medication which violates the anti-kickback statute.&nbsp;

"Patients deserve to know that their doctor is prescribing medications based on their doctor's medical judgment, and not as a result of financial incentives from pharmaceutical companies," said U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross for the Western District of New York.&nbsp;
"This settlement reflects our commitment to hold those who violate the laws accountable, regardless of their status or prestige," Ross added.&nbsp;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">SEC Creates New Crypto Task Force</h2>
Last Tuesday, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced<a href="https://www.sec.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2025-30"> the creation</a> of a crypto task force, led by Commissioner Hester Peirce and dedicated to the development of a clear and comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto assets.&nbsp;
The SEC said<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/01/43181875/sec-repeals-sab-121-policy-that-restricted-banks-from-providing-custody-services-for-bitcoin-crypto-mom-says-bye-bye"> the current </a>legal confusion in the crypto industry has led to "an environment hostile to innovation and conducive to fraud." The task force's focus will be to "draw clear regulatory lines, provide realistic paths to registration, craft sensible disclosure frameworks, and deploy enforcement resources judiciously," the SEC said.&nbsp;
"This undertaking will take time, patience, and much hard work. It will succeed only if the Task Force has input from a wide range of investors, industry participants, academics, and other interested parties. We look forward to working hand-in-hand with the public to foster a regulatory environment that protects investors, facilitates capital formation, fosters market integrity, and supports innovation," stated Commissioner Peirce.
