Barrick Gold (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>) is getting closer to resolving a prolonged dispute with Mali's military junta over the country's mining code reforms. Seeking to maximize state revenue, the junta demanded higher royalties and a greater share of profits from foreign operators.
The situation <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/01/42823362/barrick-gold-warns-about-production-suspension-in-mali" rel="noreferrer noopener">gradually worsened</a> since 2023, leading to a standoff with Barrick, which operates the Loulo-Gounkoto complex, one of Mali's largest gold mines.
Junta sought hundreds of millions in additional payments, detaining Barrick employees and issuing an arrest warrant for CEO Mark Bristow. However, when they seized gold shipments last month, Barrick <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43651098/geopolitics-and-resource-nationalism-are-choking-the-commodity-supply" rel="noreferrer noopener">halted operations</a> at the complex, causing the management to lower the firm's production guidance to between 3.2 million and 3.5 million ounces.
The suspension of operations hurt Barrick's bottom line and cost Mali millions in lost revenue. Per the latest data, the country's gold output fell as much as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/02/43588936/malian-gold-output-falls-23-as-new-mining-law-pressures-producers" rel="noreferrer noopener">23% in 2024</a>.
Still, according <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/barrick-gold-signs-agreement-with-mali-end-mining-dispute-2025-02-19/" rel="noreferrer noopener">to</a> Reuters, Barrick has found common ground and signed a new agreement. The deal reportedly includes a payment of $438 million in exchange for the release of detained employees, the return of seized gold, and the resumption of operations at Loulo-Gounkoto.
Despite progress, the situation remains uncertain until Malian authorities sign the agreement. Despite the challenges in Mali and growing uncertainty in emerging markets, Barrick continues to make substantial investments, completing feasibility studies for two large-scale projects.
The Lumwana Expansion project in Zambia is set to transform the mine into a top-tier copper producer. The mine's proven and probable reserves have increased by 180% since 2023, with total reserves now at 1.6 billion tons grading 0.52% copper.
The expansion will extend Lumwana's operational life by 17 years to 2057 and double the processing capacity to 54 million tons annually. Copper production is expected to reach 240,000 tons annually, placing it among the top 25 copper mines globally.
Meanwhile, the feasibility study for Pakistan's copper-gold Reko Diq project shows 3.9 billion tons grading 0.43% copper and around 29 million contained ounces of gold.
The initial production phase targets 45 million tons of ore annually by 2028, with plans to expand capacity to 90 million tons annually by 2034. The initial investment is $5.6 billion, with an additional $3.3 billion allocated for expansion.

Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>) shares are trading higher Wednesday after the company reported better-than-expected <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43657514/barrick-gold-q4-higher-realized-gold-prices-lower-aisc-but-revenue-falls-short">fourth-quarter earnings</a> and announced a new $1 billion stock buyback program.
What To Know: The company's fourth-quarter revenue came in at $3.645 billion, up 8% from the previous quarter but missing analyst estimates of $3.978 billion. Barrick reported adjusted earnings per share of 46 cents, beating Wall Street's expectation of 41 cents. 
CEO Mark Bristow highlighted steady operational improvements across several key projects, including Pueblo Viejo, Veladero and Nevada Gold Mines. He noted that the company had made progress at Kibali while advancing major feasibility studies for the Lumwana and Reko Diq projects. Despite concerns surrounding Barrick's exposure to Mali, Bristow emphasized that the company's fundamental value remains strong.
Barrick also authorized a new $1 billion buyback program, replacing its previous program, which had repurchased $498 million in shares.
For 2025, Barrick expects gold production between 3.15 million and 3.5 million ounces, with all-in-sustaining costs projected between $1,460 and $1,560 per ounce. Capital expenditures are forecasted to be between $3.1 billion and $3.6 billion and copper production is expected to range between 200,000 and 230,000 tonnes, driven by higher output at Lumwana.

Barrick Gold CEO Says Gold Becoming Reserve Currency For Central Banks

Barrick Gold shares are trading higher after the company reported better-than-expected Q4 adjusted EPS results and authorized a new $1 billion stock buyback program.

Barrick Gold Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>) shares are trading slightly higher after it reported fourth-quarter revenue of $3.645 billion, up 8% quarter over quarter, missing the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/g43651239/barrick-delivers-strong-year-end-performance-while-advancing-key-growth-projects" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $3.978 billion</a>. 
Gold production stood at 1,080 thousand ounces (+15% Q/Q), and gold sales were 965 thousand ounces (flat Q/Q).
The average realized gold price rose&nbsp;7% Q/Q&nbsp;to&nbsp;$2,657 per ounce, and all-in-sustaining costs (AISC) fell 4%&nbsp;Q/Q to&nbsp;$1,451 per ounce in the quarter.
Copper production surged 33%&nbsp;Q/Q to 64 thousand tonnes, and the average realized copper price declined 7% Q/Q&nbsp;to&nbsp;$3.96 per pound.
Adjusted EPS of&nbsp;46 cents beat <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">the consensus of&nbsp;41 cents</a>.
At the end of the year, cash and cash equivalents stood at&nbsp;$4.07 billion, and debt was&nbsp;$4.73 billion.
Capital expenditure increased 21%&nbsp;Q/Q to&nbsp;$891 million, and operating cash flow stood at&nbsp;$1.39 billion.&nbsp;
President and chief executive&nbsp;Mark Bristow&nbsp;said, &#8220;During the fourth quarter, we made steady progress in ramping up operations at Pueblo Viejo, improving recovery, despite lower production on the back of a slight decrease in grade.&#8221;
&#8220;At Veladero and Nevada Gold Mines, we boosted production and we closed the gaps at Kibali while strengthening the management team there. Additionally, we completed two major feasibility studies to advance the transformational Lumwana and Reko Diq projects, and also significantly increased our reserves and resources.&#8221;
&#8220;While ongoing issues in Mali remain an investor concern, which have overly weighed on the share price, Barrick&#8217;s fundamental value proposition has never been stronger.&#8221;&nbsp;
Barrick declared a fourth-quarter dividend per share of 10 cents, payable on March 17, to shareholders of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/g43651222/barrick-reports-share-repurchases-and-declares-q4-dividend" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> record as of February 28, 2025</a>.
Barrick repurchased 28.675 million shares during the year. The company&#8217;s Board of Directors approved a new share repurchase program of up to $1.0 billion.
As part of this move, Barrick had discontinued the share repurchase program announced on February 14, 2024, under which it had repurchased<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/g43651224/barrick-announces-new-share-buyback-program" rel="noreferrer noopener"> $498 million in common shares</a>.
FY25&nbsp;Outlook: The company expects attributable gold production in the range of 3.15–3.5 million ounces (excluding production from temporarily suspended Loulo-Gounkoto) and AISC in the range of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">1,460 &#8211; 1,560&nbsp;per ounce</a>.
For 2025, attributable capital expenditure&nbsp;is expected to be&nbsp;$3.100 billion &#8211; $3.600 billion.
The company sees attributable copper production of 200,000–230,000 tonnes in 2025, led by higher production at Lumwana.
