Speaking to Schawbel, O'Leary said his mother's financial advice is simple but has stuck with him.
"She told me to always save 10% of everything you bring in, whether it's a gift from your grandmother or whether you make it at the ice cream store or cutting lawn," he told Schawbel, adding that the primary idea is to save whatever you can. "Everybody can do it."

Former President Donald Trump was fined for violating a gag order in his criminal trial Monday by<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/05/38646992/trump-fined-1-000-for-gag-order-violation-threatened-with-jail-time-again-by-judge-i-will-if-nec"> Judge Juan Merchan.</a>
While speaking to reporters after the trial ended Monday, Trump appeared unphased by the recent ruling.
What Happened: Over the last week, Trump<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/04/38523639/judge-threatens-trump-with-incarceration-fines-him-for-violating-gag-order-jail-may-be-a-necessa"> has been fined $10,000</a> for 10 violations of the gag order imposed before the trial began.
Merchan suggested Monday that the fines weren't working and once again threatened potential jail time for the former president.
Trump's comments Monday suggest he could violate the gag order again.
"Frankly, our Constitution is far more important than jail. It's not even close. I'll do that sacrifice any day," Trump said, as <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/live-blog/trump-hush-money-trial-day-12-live-updates-rcna150792">shared </a>by NBC News.
Trump told reporters the case should be over.
"I thought they were finished today. They all want to keep me off the campaign trail."
Based on Trump's comments suggesting he won't be silenced, the trial and Trump's social media activity could be more closely monitored going forward to see if Trump will face jail time.
"His continued willful violations of this Court's orders threaten the administration of justice and constitute a direct attack on the rule of law. I cannot allow this to continue," Merchan said of Trump on Monday morning.
Merchan told the court he does not want to impose jail time on Trump.
"The last thing I want to do is to put you in jail. You are the former president of the United States, and possibly the next president as well. There are many reasons why incarceration is truly a last resort for you."
Merchan did not specify which jail Trump would be sent to. A spokesperson for Rikers Island jail said they would welcome Trump if he was sent there.
"The department would find appropriate housing," spokesperson Frank Dwyer said.

Why It's Important: The criminal trial sees<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/04/38326553/trump-hush-money-trial-has-12-jurors-here-are-the-7-men-5-women-to-decide-former-presidents-fate"> Trump facing charges</a> that he falsified business records to conceal money paid to silence adult actress Stormy Daniels.
The trial began with jury selection on April 15 and is expected to last six to eight weeks.
Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass estimated Monday that the District Attorney's office has two weeks left for its side of the trial. This could include having Daniels and former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen testify as key witnesses.
Based on the timeline, prosecution would conclude on May 21. With court not in session on May 22 or May 24, it is now likely that the trial stretches past the Memorial Day weekend.
Witnesses in court Monday included former Trump Organization controller Jeff McConney and former Trump Organization accounts payable supervisor Deborah Tarasoff, who remains a Trump Organization employee.
On Monday, the jury was shown check stubs and checks paid to Cohen.
Tarasoff also testified that Trump would write "VOID" on checks and send them back if he didn't approve the expenses. Invoices over $10,000 had to be approved by Trump, Donald Trump Jr. or Eric Trump, Tarasoff said Monday.
Each payment shown in court Monday was over the $10,000 level, which could come into play later in the trial.

What Happened: A new poll from Rasmussen Reports showed one 2024 presidential candidate with a 10-point lead, an outlier from other election polls and current <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports-betting/24/04/38417836/trump-and-biden-get-ready-2024-election-betting-odds-point-to-major-showdown">betting odds for the election.</a>
The new Rasmussen <a href="https://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/biden_administration/election_2024_trump_now_10_over_biden">poll </a>had Donald Trump at 46% and Joe Biden at 36%. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. came in at 9% in the latest poll. The remaining people polled chose another candidate or said they were undecided.
When the poll was expanded to more candidates, the Rasmussen results were as follows:
Donald Trump: 48%
Joe Biden: 36%
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: 8%
Cornel West: 1%
Jill Stein: 1%
The latest Rasmussen poll marked an improvement for Trump who was at 44% in April and a drop for Biden who was at 38%.

Why It's Important: The Republican-leaning Rasmussen was called into question when the latest poll results were shared. Many were quick to point out that a double-digit lead at this point in the election cycle is an extreme outlier.
One publication <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/trump-vs-biden-polls-dont-be-fooled-by-outliers.html">noted</a> the last time a president won the national popular vote by more than 10 points it was Ronald Reagan 30 years ago when he won 49 of the 50 states.
The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/08/rasmussen-538-polling/">shared </a>earlier this year that Rasmussen Reports was dropped from poll aggregation platform FiveThirtyEight, which is owned by ABC News.
Rasmussen has spoken out in support of its polling and said that it was unfairly removed from the polling aggregate site.
"Dear ABC, the presidential race ISN'T tight. We have Trump up 12, not 2. Oh, and ABC kicked us out of the 538 aggregate because we wouldn't disclose proprietary info," Rasmussen <a href="https://twitter.com/Rasmussen_Poll/status/1787485122922414260">tweeted</a>.
A tweet that shared political polling data saw many comments laughing at the Rasmussen report and some calling for Community Notes, the X tool that shares reasons why posts are inaccurate.
Biden won the popular vote 51.3% to Trump's 46.9% in the 2020 presidential election. Trump won the electoral college vote and Hillary Clinton won the popular vote at 48.2% to Trump's 46.1% in the 2016 election.
It is five months before voters head to the polls to select the next president. Until then, election polls will serve as a guide to how likely each candidate is to win.

Robinhood (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/hood-stock-quote/">HOOD</a>) stock has made a nice come back this year, as investors bet on the company&rsquo;s business model. Robinhood simplifies investing in stocks and cryptocurrencies online. In March, it had 23.6 million funded customers and $80.9 billion in trading volume, a 41% increase from last year.



The platform&rsquo;s cryptocurrency trading increased by 86% to reach $6.5 billion.&nbsp;If these numbers can continue, there&rsquo;s certainly a lot to like about this stock&rsquo;s potential. Of course, this is among the most closely-watched <a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-types/growth-stocks/">growth stocks</a> that also carries significant risk. Let&rsquo;s try to square these two ideas and dive into whether this stock is a buy, sell or hold.



<h2>Interest Income and HOOD Stock</h2>



In February, Robinhood surprised investors with a profitable fourth quarter. Strong results were driven by <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/robinhoods-q4-revenue-rises-interest-income-boost-2024-02-13/">increased interest income</a> and trading activity. Shares surged 10% after the announcement, benefiting from higher interest rates.



The company reported robust revenue growth in 2024, driven by increased net deposits, rising gold adoption, and market share gains. Robinhood now aims for margin expansion, expecting a stable to slightly increased head count this year. 



Analysts also expect a 1 cent net loss, despite the company recently posting a 3 cent per share profit.



Interestingly, Robinhood&rsquo;s recent growth has been driven by increased margin investing. This has allowed the company to lend eligible customers money for securities, but is a strategy that also carries risk. 



Net revenue increased from $167 million to $236 million in the past year. Transaction-based revenues, driven by crypto trends, saw impressive growth. But as mentioned, these catalysts are certainly ones to put in the higher risk bucket.



Despite seeing a 4% decline in monthly active users, the company also saw over 23% increase in average revenue per user. Overall, the numbers are pointing in the right direction, and that&rsquo;s why HOOD stock is up significantly this year. 



<h2>Fintech Innovation at Its Finest</h2>



After being in the market for over 10 years, Robinhood aims to democratize the finance sector with more <a href="https://digitalcommons.colby.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2338&amp;context=honorstheses">accessible and affordable</a> investing options. The company introduced zero-commission trading and popularized fractional shares, prompting changes in brokerage models. 



However, Robinhood has seen some slow engagement in investing and received backlash for promoting impulsive investing moves.



Last year, Robinhood generated $1.9 billion in revenue despite facing hurdles. That said, the company did struggle with profits, reporting over $500 million loss for the year. Although customer growth was crawling, funded customers saw a 1.7% increase from the previous year.



<h2>HOOD Stock is Not for the Faint Heart</h2>



For investors who want low risk investments in finance, HOOD stock could be a bet that&rsquo;s not worth making. 



This company is expected to have significant volatility, which may deter some investors. That&rsquo;s understandable, and a reality that isn&rsquo;t likely to change moving forward.



That said, there is something to Robinhood&rsquo;s core business model that remains attractive to many long-term investors. Unlike traditional brokers, Robinhood attracts younger investors, positioning it for future growth as these investors accumulate wealth. 



Analysts have pointed out Robinhood&rsquo;s relatively tiny share of U.S. self-directed assets, but significant share of self-directed brokerage accounts.



Investing in Robinhood might be challenging, especially for risk-averse investors or Bitcoin (<a href="https://investorplace.com/cryptocurrency/btc-usd/">BTC-USD</a>) critics. However, those willing to tolerate volatility may see growth, given Robinhood&rsquo;s appeal to younger clients with growing wealth. 



I&rsquo;m going to put Robinhood in the cautious buy category for now, but only for investors who have the risk tolerance to ride out the volatility with this stock moving forward.

I was wrong about SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/sofi-stock-quote/">SOFI</a>) stock. After three years of waiting for a return on my investment, I sold my shares recently, at a loss.



The stock currently sells at about $7/share. If you got in a year ago, when it traded near $5, you&rsquo;re in great shape. But I&rsquo;d still recommend you sell it.



Here&rsquo;s why.



<h2>SoFi Stock and Consumer Banking</h2>



SoFi has evolved into a consumer bank. Its main business is taking deposits and making loans, for houses, for education, and for other life expenses.



This can be a good business. It&rsquo;s certainly growing for SoFi. SoFi revenues last year passed $2.1 billion. They were $1.57 billion in 2022, and under $1 billion the year before that.



The problem is that SoFi continues to lose money, because SoFi wants to be much more than a consumer bank. 



As I wrote <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/11/why-sofi-stock-still-gets-so-much-love/">last November</a>, it offers banking software through Technisys, banking services through Galileo, and automates risk management through Konecta. 



It competes with Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/hood-stock-quote/">HOOD</a>) in brokerage. CEO Anthony Noto talks of it becoming a &ldquo;10-bagger,&rdquo; delivering 10-for-1 returns to investors.



I bought this hook, line, and sinker. <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/08/ignore-the-post-earnings-retreat-and-keep-betting-on-sofi-stock/">I defended the company </a>after bad earnings last year, when it fell from $10/share to $8.



But it&rsquo;s still just <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/10/sofis-identity-crisis-a-bank-in-fintechs-clothing/">a bank.</a> Banks are defined by their &ldquo;yield spread,&rdquo; the difference between what they pay for money and what they rent it for. 



But SoFi&rsquo;s spread is narrower than the big banks it competes with. That&rsquo;s because it&rsquo;s paying depositors <a href="https://www.sofi.com/banking-short">4.5% for their money</a>, with no account fees.



<h2>Banking Breaking Bad</h2>



I wasn&rsquo;t just wrong on SoFi. I was wrong about the whole banking sector.



I figured that once money started costing money, as it does now, selling money should be a great business. But banks are leveraged. They compete with private equity companies that aren&rsquo;t. 



Banks face regulation private lenders don&rsquo;t. They also hold reserves against deposits, whose return could be lower than what&rsquo;s needed to run the business. Watch those maturities!



Against this backdrop, SoFi is also taking low-quality credits. I love millennials and have two of my own. But lending to low net-worth borrowers carries risk. SoFi reported<a href="https://investors.sofi.com/news/news-details/2024/SoFi-Technologies-Reports-Q1-2024-Net-Revenue-of-645-Million-and-Net-Income-of-88-Million-Marking-Second-Consecutive-Quarter-of-GAAP-Profitability/default.aspx"> 4.8%</a> of its loans were in default at the end of March.



SoFi keeps seeking new niches that might offer a greater return. Buying Wyndham Capital last year <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/06/why-sofi-stock-is-still-the-ultimate-long-term-bet-in-digital-finance/">got it into home loans</a>, but it hasn&rsquo;t expanded that niche. Its growth in the March quarter was still in personal loans.



That&rsquo;s why professional money managers have soured on SoFi. Tipranks now has just as many buyers as sellers, 4, with <a href="https://www.tipranks.com/stocks/sofi/forecast">eight on the fence</a>. 



Traders at Stocktwits remain bullish, <a href="https://stocktwits.com/WallyWalraven/message/571525562">copying Noto&rsquo;s statements</a> like he&rsquo;s Warren Buffett of Berkshire-Hathaway (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/brk-a-stock-quote/">BRK-A</a>) (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/brk-b-stock-quote/">BRK-B</a>). He&rsquo;s not.



This doesn&rsquo;t mean you can&rsquo;t make money in SoFi stock right now. The stock <a href="https://stocktwits.com/VikeInvests/message/571541973">might even go up from here.</a> The question is how much you might make and whether that is worth your time.



<h2>The Bottom Line</h2>



Watching TV analyst Jim Cramer&rsquo;s contortions over the Starbucks (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/sbux-stock-quote/">SBUX</a>) <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/05/wedbush-just-slashed-its-price-target-on-starbucks-sbux-stock/">quarter</a>, I was reminded of an old investment aphorism. Not all good companies are good investments.



SoFi is a good company. Noto is a good operator. In the present economic cycle, it&rsquo;s just not a great investment.



There&rsquo;s always an opportunity cost in what you own. I decided my money could be doing something else. I could own Amazon. Com (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amzn-stock-quote/">AMZN</a>), or Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>). 



If you insist on owning banks, buy JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/jpm-stock-quote/">JPM</a>). If you really need diversification, PepsiCo (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/pep-stock-quote/">PEP</a>) isn&rsquo;t a bad bet.



But you learn to pull the plug on what doesn&rsquo;t work. Selling is the hardest lesson investors learn. Not everything works. SoFi didn&rsquo;t.

Is Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/hood-stock-quote/">HOOD</a>) about to be at the center of the next big crypto scandal? That&rsquo;s the question investors are likely pondering today. HOOD stock fell as markets opened on news that the popular trading app had <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-05-06/robinhood-markets-gets-sec-subpoena-tied-to-crypto-business?embedded-checkout=true&amp;sref=0N1JmzAH">received a Wells Notice</a> from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding its crypto operations. 



Shares have since bounced back, but the news is hardly reassuring for investors. It means that the SEC is likely to bring legal action against Robinhood. At a time when many crypto stocks are surging, this news could spell the end of the growth HOOD stock has enjoyed over the past six months.



This development raises plenty of questions regarding the future of Robinhood&rsquo;s crypto trading arm. But while receiving a Wells Notice is never good news, HOOD stock has reacted in such a way that some investors may be tempted to disregard the development. Still, the Wells Notice news warrants a closer look.



<h2>What&rsquo;s Happening With HOOD Stock?</h2>



While HOOD stock has seemingly recovered from this morning&rsquo;s news, its performance has been volatile. As of this writing, shares are up about 0.5% for the day. Additionally, while shares have spent the past week mostly trending upward, HOOD remains in the red for the past one month, even as investor enthusiasm for crypto stocks has remained high.



Robinhood disclosed that it had received a Wells Notice in an <a href="https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0001783879/b2282418-56e4-426d-aff6-761967847c9c.pdf">8K filing</a>:




&ldquo;On May 4, 2024, RHC received a &lsquo;Wells Notice&rsquo; from the Staff of the SEC [&hellip;] stating that the Staff has advised RHC that it made a &lsquo;preliminary determination&rsquo; to recommend that the SEC file an enforcement action against RHC alleging violations of Sections 15(a) and 17A of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended. The potential action may involve a civil injunctive action, public administrative proceeding, and/or a cease-and-desist proceeding and may seek remedies that include an injunction, a cease-and-desist order, disgorgement, pre-judgment interest, civil money penalties, and censure, revocation, and limitations on activities.&rdquo;




The company responded to the Wells Notice in a <a href="https://newsroom.aboutrobinhood.com/robinhood-response-to-receipt-of-wells-notice-from-the-u-s-securities-and-exchange-commission/">statement posted to its newsroom</a>. In the response, Chief Legal, Compliance and Corporate Affairs Officer Dan Gallagher claimed that Robinhood believes the assets listed on its platform do not fall under the category of securities. &ldquo;We look forward to engaging with the SEC to make clear just how weak any case against Robinhood Crypto would be on both the facts and the law,&rdquo; he noted.



How exactly the SEC intends to proceed with the case against Robinhood is unclear. But this isn&rsquo;t the first time the trading app has faced severe legal scrutiny. In December 2020, the SEC charged the firm with <a href="https://www.sec.gov/news/press-release/2020-321">misleading customers</a> regarding sources of revenue. Other regulators have <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/transactional/robinhood-settles-massachusetts-regulators-trading-case-75-million-2024-01-18/">accused</a> Robinhood of encouraging inexperienced investors to pursue high-risk trades. Even as HOOD stock rallies in the face of bad news, the company&rsquo;s history is against it.



<h2>Why It Matters</h2>



Robinhood is beloved by the retail investing crowd. It&rsquo;s credited as being the app that first introduced many everyday people to trading. For that reason, HOOD stock has sometimes benefitted from meme momentum, enjoying the status that comes alongside being a retail favorite. However, as InvestorPlace contributor Joel Baglole <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/dont-fall-for-the-robinhood-stock-hype-this-meme-darling-is-still-a-hard-pass/">argues</a>, a &ldquo;meme darling&rdquo; is basically all Robinhood is. Even after mounting what looks like a comeback, HOOD stock remains a speculative play.



Now this news from the SEC is calling its growth prospects further into question. If the Wells Notice leads to a lengthy legal proceeding, investors may jump ship to avoid taking losses from any ensuing scandal. At the end of day, Robinhood is a company with a history marked by unflattering allegations. Trusting it will be difficult for investors.
