Indoor cannabis cultivation in the United States consumes more energy than all outdoor agriculture combined, primarily due to the need for specialized lighting, climate control and ventilation systems. This high energy demand is exacerbated by legal requirements mandating in-state production, which often leads to reliance on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/cannabis">energy-intensive indoor facilities.</a>
Despite the industry&#8217;s rapid growth, there has been limited focus on its environmental impact. A recent <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590332225000053">study</a> undertaken by Evan Mills of the Energy and Resources Group of UC Berkeley, points out that indoor cultivation accounts for approximately two-thirds of U.S. marijuana production and is a major emitter of greenhouse gases. For instance, producing four pounds of cannabis in an indoor facility can consume as much electricity as an average American home uses in a year.
Indoor cultivation is also far more energy intensive than more familiar building types and manufacturing processes, says Mills. &#8220;For comparison, while a typical cannabis plant factory is similar in size to an average Walmart, it uses ∼100 times more energy. Energy use per unit floor area is ∼600 times that of conventional storage warehouses and ∼40 times that of energy-intensive hospitals. Energy use per unit weight is ∼200 times that of manufacturing best practices for aluminum, ∼2,200:1 for blast furnace steel, and ∼10,500:1 for Portland cement.&#8221;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Greenwashing</h2>
Mills estimates that both legal and illegal marijuana cultivation operations in the U.S. consume about 596 petajoules of energy annually. "Consumers are led to believe that this is ‘nature's medicine' and that it's ‘green' in every sense of the word. There's lots of greenwashing."
Several electric utility companies are involved in supplying energy to indoor marijuana cultivation facilities. For example, Xcel Energy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XEL#NASDAQ">XEL</a>), which operates in Colorado, has experienced significant load growth due to the cannabis industry.
Since March 2017, California&#8217;s PG&amp;E (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PCG#NYSE">PCG</a>) declared business customers eligible for service under an agricultural rate plan that included customers who grow cannabis outdoors and those who grow indoors in commercial greenhouses.
Both California and Colorado have had legal marijuana for over a decade and are major producers of indoor weed.

Meanwhile, says Mills, a research gap and the industry&#8217;s ineligibility to benefit from federal incentives highlight opportunities for local action. Given the significant impact of cannabis consumption and product types on emissions, &#8220;it is high time for drug policy and environmental policy to be harmonized.&#8221;

The company has beaten analyst earnings per share estimates in four straight quarters. On the revenue side, the company has beaten analyst estimates in only four of the last 10 quarters. Several analysts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/PCG/analyst-ratings">kept bullish ratings </a>on the stock while lowering price targets.
The stock was down over 5% for the week and shares are down over 7% over the last year.

UBS maintained a Buy rating and raised the price target from $225 to $265. Interactive Brokers will also be presenting at the UBS Financial Services Conference on Feb. 10. Goldman Sachs analyst James Yaro <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/25/01/43132552/interactive-brokers-delivers-well-rounded-earnings-beat-analysts-see-global-retail-trading-growth-ahead">maintained a Buy</a> rating on Interactive Brokers and raised the price target from $214 to $226. The analyst said Interactive Brokers' fourth-quarter financial results showed the company was "well-rounded."
"Looking ahead, the company expects to conduct a number of new programming projects, and plans to increase the marketing budget, both of which should support strong account growth, around which management sounded a constructive tone," Yaro said.

After struggling in past quarters, the company has beaten analyst estimates for both revenue and earnings per share in the last two quarters. The stock may have seen increased interest from readers as the company <a href="https://ir.mrcy.com/news-releases/news-release-details/mercury-develop-data-processing-subsystem-us-satellite-program">announced </a>a new $24.5 million contract for data processing in the U.S. Satellite Program.

The interest comes as several analysts have shared updates on the small-cap stock in recent weeks and with a new executive announcement. The company added Sanjeev Singh Sahni, a former Wayfair executive, in the newly created President role. In the role, Sahni will lead global operations, product, technology and supplier services. JMP Securities maintained a Buy rating on the stock with a $42 price target recently. Earlier this month, JPMorgan analyst Cory Carpenter <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/gaming/25/01/42914051/take-two-xometry-jpmorgans-bets-in-2025">shared a $45</a> price target on the stock, highlighting the company as a small-cap darling.
"We like XMTR in 2025 as a play on manufacturing under Trump," Carpenter said.

Barclays Maintains Overweight on PG&E, Lowers Price Target to $23

PG&E shares are trading lower amid weakness in utility stocks. The stock recently was under pressure amid CA fires.

Pacific Gas &amp; Electric Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PCG#NYSE">PCG</a>) stock has recently faced volatility amid shifting investor sentiment <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/utilities">and market dynamics.</a>
Activist investor Dan Loeb&#8216;s hedge fund, Third Point, held 49.7 million shares in utility company Pacific Gas &amp; Electric Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PCG#NYSE">PCG</a>) as of Sept. 30, 2024, making it the fund&#8217;s largest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/25/01/42788070/hedge-fund-giant-dan-loebs-pge-bet-beats-market">holding at the time.</a>
On Jan. 13, 2025, BMO Capital analyst James M. Thalacker initiated coverage on the company with an Outperform and<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/pcg/analyst-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> a price target of $21</a>.
The analyst writes that he views PCG shares as a core holding in the regulated utility sector, offering investors a rare combination of deep value and premium, visible growth potential.
Thalacker&#8217;s five-year forecast (2024-2028) projects EPS growth of around 9.2% and rate base growth of about 10%, aligning with the company's long-term EPS target of at least 9%.
Also, on Dec. 17, JPMorgan analysts Jeremy Tonet and Richard W. Sunderland stated that they believe PG&amp;E's wildfire mitigation investments, data center pipeline and re-rating potential <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/25/01/42788070/hedge-fund-giant-dan-loebs-pge-bet-beats-market" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">could drive substantial gains</a>. 
Notably, last month, the Department of Energy disclosed plans to provide Pacific Gas &amp; Electric with a record $15 billion loan guarantee to strengthen its electrical grid and support climate resiliency initiatives.
If finalized, the loan guarantee for PG&amp;E&#8217;s Project Polaris will support hydropower, battery storage, transmission upgrades, and virtual power plants across its service area.
The Energy Department said that these infrastructure investments will enable PG&amp;E to address projected load growth, enhance electric reliability, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.energy.gov/lpo/articles/lpo-announces-conditional-commitment-pacific-gas-electric-company-expand-hydropower" rel="noreferrer noopener">and</a> lower costs for consumers throughout California.
Earlier, during its third-quarter earnings call, PCG raised its five-year capital investment plan by $1 billion, bringing the total to $63 billion for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/11/n41800512/pg-e-corporation-reports-strong-third-quarter-results-strengthens-2024-guidance-initiates-2025-gui" rel="noreferrer noopener">the 2024-2028 period</a>.
The company also reaffirmed its equity issuance guidance <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">of $3 billion for 2025-2028</a>.
The company expects to release its fourth-quarter earnings <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">results in February 2025</a>.

What the Options Market Tells Us About PG&E

The Los Angeles area is bracing Tuesday for another stretch of "extreme fire weather&#8221;: the National Weather service issued a &#8220;Particularly Dangerous Situation" red flag warning for<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/01/42963718/beyonce-pledges-25-million-to-help-california-wildfire-relief-efforts-nfl-donates-5-million-moves-mondays-playoff-game-to-arizona"> Southern California. </a> 
The Details: Firefighters are again facing high winds of 40 to 70 miles per hour as they fight to contain the wildfires that have caused at least 25 deaths and burned more than 60 square miles in the Los Angeles area.&nbsp;
The Los Angeles Fire Department reports the Eaton Fire is now at 35% containment and the Palisades Fire is now at 17% containment as of Tuesday morning.&nbsp;
"Severe fire weather conditions will continue through tomorrow," Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone said.
"The worst winds are predicted today for the late afternoon and into Wednesday," Marrone added.&nbsp;
Approximately 88,000 Los Angeles County residents are under evacuation orders and more than 84,000 residents are under evacuation warnings, county Sheriff Robert Luna said Tuesday during a news conference, as reported by CNN.

Edison Faces Lawsuits: At least five lawsuits were filed against Southern California Edison, a subsidiary of Edison International (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EIX#NYSE">EIX</a>), on Monday, according to an ABC News <a href="https://abc7.com/post/california-wildfires-2-lawsuits-filed-southern-edison-eaton-fire-pasadena-altadena/15796131/">report</a>.&nbsp;
The lawsuits allege Edison failed to de-energize its electrical equipment that potentially ignited the Eaton fire despite red flag warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
California fire agencies also confirmed on Monday they are investigating Southern California Edison over the possibility that downed utility equipment contributed to the Hurst fire, according to<a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-01-12/officials-investigating-whether-southern-california-edison-equipment-ignited-hurst-fire"> a report</a> from the Los Angeles Times. 
The company said<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/b42935494/edison-international-provides-latest-update-on-southern-california-wildfires-and-sce-power-outages"> in a statement</a> on Sunday that it filed two Electric Safety Incident Reports, one related to the Eaton fire and one related to the Hurst fire.&nbsp;
SCE said a downed power line was discovered at a time and location near the Hurst fire ignition, but it does not yet know whether the damage occurred before or after the start of the fire.&nbsp;
&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen in your reporting the videos, we&#8217;ve seen the photos, so we know that there was fire there. We don&#8217;t know what caused it,&#8221; Edison CEO Pedro Pizarro <a href="https://abc7.com/post/california-wildfires-2-lawsuits-filed-southern-edison-eaton-fire-pasadena-altadena/15796131/">told ABC7 </a>on Monday.
&#8220;Again, there was the obvious signature that we would see normally, but we have not been able to get up close to those lines because firefighters have determined that it hasn&#8217;t been safe to do that yet. Whatever we find, we&#8217;ll be transparent with our public,&#8221; Pizarro added.
In 2021, SCE agreed to pay $550 million in fines and penalties related to fires that year which burned more than 380,000 acres and destroyed thousands of homes.
Edison International stock has fallen nearly 28% since the fires began last week. Pacific Gas &amp; Electric Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PCG#NYSE">PCG</a>), another California utility, has seen its stock fall nearly 20% in the past week.
