The famous BBQ wing chain has enlisted legal heavyweights at Ropes &amp; Gray to prep the filing, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-02-21/hooters-in-talks-to-prepare-a-bankruptcy-filing-in-coming-months?srnd=homepage-americas&amp;sref=TBDibEcD">Bloomberg</a>. The court showdown could kick off within the next two months.
Known for its crop-top uniforms and winking owl mascot, Hooters is trying to get its financial house in order with help from turnaround pros at boutique firm Accordion Partners. 
Meanwhile, some of its lenders have brought in Houlihan Lokey to also advise the process.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Else Is On The Bankruptcy Block?</h2>
Hooters isn&#8217;t the only sit-down dining spot feeling the heat of Chapter 11. 
Mediterranean fast-casual chain Rōti, for example, recently sold out of bankruptcy. According to <a href="https://www.chicagobusiness.com/restaurants/roti-sold-out-bankruptcy-edible-arrangements-founder">Crain&#8217;s Chicago</a>, a private-equity firm led by the founder of Edible Arrangements agreed to take it over. 
Rōti will retain 17 of its 19 locations once the deal is complete.
The culprit behind these filings? Fewer customers waltzing through doors thanks to <a href="https://www.emarketer.com/content/dining-inflation-remains-higher-than-food-home--forcing-restaurants-compete-on-value">inflation</a>. Plus, supply chain headaches, and soaring interest rates are pushing menu prices skyward. As a result, more folks are opting to cook at home.

'Pepsi, Frito-Lay Sued Over Snack Chip Price Discrimination Claim' - Bloomberg Law

Several academic studies have recently examined buying undervalued stocks using tools like the Piotroski F-Score, Joel Greenblatt&#8217;s Magic Formula, and profitability factors. I have written about these studies in this column and in my weekly e-letter.
Rather than bore you with all the detailed and academic citations; I can summarize the results very quickly for you. Buying stocks that trade at low multiples of asset value and cash flows outperforms the market indexes. This approach can be very volatile. Most of the return comes from less than half of the number of stocks. There is a high failure rate for the companies that pass the initial value screens. Adding financial and quality filters to the list of cheap stocks based on earnings and asset multiples dramatically increases the return and margin of safety in value strategies.
Today, I decided to look at stocks that passed all the filters. I screened for companies that passed the Magic Formula Filters of high earning yields and high returns of capital. Then, I filtered out those with low profitability levels and Piotroski F-scores.
This produced a list of profitable companies with strong finances that are currently undervalued. I immediately noticed that the best bargains were outside the United States. This is unsurprising, given the huge performance gap over the past several years.
While running the numbers, I made a surprise discovery.
&nbsp;Buying high-quality, undervalued U.S. companies has beaten the markets even during the past five tech-dominated years.
&nbsp;Companies outside the U.S. (excluding China) have done even better.
&nbsp;Given that there are far more bargain opportunities outside the United States than inside, there is a good chance that this outperformance will continue.
Ambev SA (Ticker: ABEV) is a Brazilian brewer and distributor of popular beers like Budweiser, Corona, Stella, and others in Brazil, the Caribbean, and Central America. It also sells Pepsi (Ticker: PEP) products in the same markets.

Its continued expansion in Latin America and Europe and rising postpaid subscriber growth enhance long-term revenue visibility.
&nbsp;Additionally, América Móvil benefits from its dominant market share in Mexico and other key regions, allowing it to generate stable cash flows.
The balance sheet is strong, and the majority owner, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, has deep pockets. At the current single-digit multiple of the business&#8217;s cash production.
&nbsp;América Móvil is an excellent buy for patient, aggressive investors.
Vista Energy (Ticker: VIST), the Mexican oil and gas company, is another compelling opportunity. Vista is an independent oil and gas company headquartered in Mexico City, Mexico. Established in 2017, the company focuses on the exploration and production of oil and gas, with primary operations in Argentina and Mexico.
&nbsp;Vista&#8217;s principal assets are in the Vaca Muerta formation within Argentina&#8217;s Neuquina basin. These assets make the stock a screaming buy for value-oriented investors willing to look outside the United States.
According to the few Wall Street analysts who follow the stock, it is a strong buy due to its exceptional growth potential, efficient operations, and strategic positioning in Argentina&#8217;s Vaca Muerta shale play, one of the most promising unconventional oil and gas basins outside North America.
Citigroup was just out last week with an updated buy ranking and price target that is well above the current price.
The company is profitable, in solid financial condition, and trades at bargain basement prices.
Latin America is way off Wall Street and the financial media&#8217;s radar screens. The instant experts of the internet have not yet surrendered their status as fiscal policy experts and nuclear engineers, and they are unlikely to discover that Latin countries have actual stock exchanges and economies involving more than all-inclusive resorts. These companies pass all the quality and financial strength filters and are undervalued. Owning a portfolio of overlooked international companies that pass all the filters has been a winning strategy, and I expect that to continue.

David Kennerley, who is currently the senior vice president and CFO for PepsiCo Inc Europe, will step into the role of senior vice president and CFO at Kroger beginning April 3, succeeding Todd Foley.
Kennerley will officially join the company on March 10, with Foley continuing as interim CFO until the end of Kroger&#8217;s fiscal year 2024.

Key Items to Watch: Coca-Cola's earnings report comes after rival PepsiCo (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PEP#NASDAQ">PEP</a>) recently<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43460249/pepsicos-q4-sales-miss-estimates-on-downcast-performance-in-north-america-stock-dives"> reported fourth-quarter financial results. </a>Pepsi shares fell after the report with the company missing analyst estimates.
While Pepsi competes in both the beverage and food markets, the company's North American PepsiCo division is most comparable with the beverage unit of Coca-Cola in North America. This segment saw flat revenue in the quarter for Pepsi.
Coca-Cola's report could include a look at inflation, consumer spending habits and more on how higher prices for several grocery items are impacting spending on beverages.
The beverage giant is a key market indicator as a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, although the company's lower share price makes the stock the 28th largest weighting of 30 stocks.
The company's earnings report will also be closely watched by legendary investor Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>)(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>).
Berkshire Hathaway owns 400 million Coca-Cola shares. The stock is one of the largest holdings of the legendary investor's conglomerate.
Investors and analysts, and maybe Buffett, will be interested to hear if Coca-Cola provides an update on 2025 guidance. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41486650/coca-cola-q3-earnings-eps-beat-pricing-growth-offset-by-volume-decline-sees-10-q4-organic-revenue-g">The company expects</a> adjusted net revenue and earnings per share to have a low single-digit and mid-single-digit currency headwind, respectively.
Price Action: Coca-Cola stock was up 1.1% to $64.55 on Monday versus a 52-week trading range of $57.93 to $73.53. Coca-Cola stock is up 7.5% over the last year.
Shares of rival Pepsi trade at $143.73 versus a 52-week trading range of $141.51 to $183.39. Pepsi stock is down 15.8% over the last year.
Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi shares have underperformed the S&amp;P 500. The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust is up 20.7% over the past year.

PepsiCo Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PEP#NASDAQ">PEP</a>) reported a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43460249/pepsicos-q4-sales-miss-estimates-on-downcast-performance-in-north-america-stock-dives">mixed fourth quarter</a>, missing revenue while beating earnings per share estimates. The management highlighted key strategic changes to its snack business Frito-Lay North America, which manufactures popular products like Lays, Cheetos, and Doritos.
What Happened: Frito-Lay North America (FLNA) experienced a decline in organic revenue for both the full year 2024 and the fourth quarter. Full-year organic revenue decreased by 0.5%, a significant drop from the 9% growth seen in 2023. In the fourth quarter alone, organic revenue was down 2%.
PepsiCo reinvested heavily in FLNA in Q4, funded partly by one-time gains, to revitalize volume growth. This included tactical spending and strategic groundwork for 2025.
The chairman and CEO of the company, Ramon Luis Laguarta in response to an analyst during its earnings call said, &#8220;We reinvested most of the one-time gains in building the infrastructure to capture those opportunities in 25.&#8221;
The management also highlighted that FLNA is emphasizing value offerings at different price points and pack sizes. This is alongside healthier options like products with lower sodium, and fat, better ingredients, and plant-based items. The management is addressing consumer preferences for &#8220;positive choices&#8221; and &#8220;permissible offerings.&#8221;
PepsiCo Beverages North America organic revenue increased 1% in 2024, which compares to 7% organic revenue growth in the prior year, whereas, Quaker Foods North America organic revenue declined 14 percent in 2024.

Why It Matters: Laguarta said, &#8220;I think there&#8217;s a higher level of awareness in general of American consumers toward health and wellness, driven by conversations around obesity drugs, and other health-related topics. This increased awareness is influencing consumer behavior, which PepsiCo is addressing through its strategies&#8221;.
Fourth-quarter sales fell slightly short of expectations, decreasing 0.2% year-over-year to $27.78 billion compared to the projected $27.89 billion. However, adjusted EPS of $1.96 beat the $1.94 consensus.
For the next full year, PepsiCo projects low single-digit organic sales growth for 2025, anticipating a gradual improvement in North America. They reaffirmed their long-term targets of 4-6% organic sales growth and high single-digit EPS growth.
Restructuring efforts aim to boost international growth and North American efficiency, the management highlighted. PepsiCo also said that it is mindful of macroeconomic uncertainties and evolving consumer behavior, including the potential impact of weight loss drugs, though no direct impact has been observed.
Price Action: Shares of PepsiCo fell 4.51% to end Tuesday at $143.49 apiece. It rose by 0.49% in after-hours. The exchange-traded fund tracking the S&amp;P 500 index, SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) rose 0.67% to $601.78 on Tuesday.
The average price target among 20 analysts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/PEP/analyst-ratings">tracked by Benzinga</a> is $178.35 with a ‘hold' rating. The estimates range from $155 to $200 apiece. Recent ratings from RBC Capital, JP Morgan, and Deutsche Bank suggest a $171.67 target, implying a potential upside of 19.05%.
