PVH (NYSE:PVH) Stock

PVH designs and markets branded apparel in more than 40 countries. Its key fashion categories include men's dress shirts, ties, sportswear, underwear, and jeans. Its two designer brands, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, now generate practically all its revenue after its recent disposition of most of its smaller brands. PVH operates e-commerce sites and about 1,500 stores, licenses its brands to third parties, and distributes its merchandise through department stores and other wholesale accounts. The firm traces its history to 1881 and is based in New York City.

The &#8220;tariff man&#8221; is back, with President Donald Trump renewing his trade war impulses. So far he&#8217;s threatened tariffs on Canada, Mexico, China, on all steel and aluminum imports. While Trump has relented, for now, on Canada and Mexico tariffs, the China tariffs have gone into effect, and China has responded in kind.
American companies do billions of dollars of business with China every year, and Chinese imports make up a considerable chunk of goods in the electronics, apparel, semiconductor, furniture, and toy industries here in the United States.
However, some companies have more pricing power than others. Firms with tight margins, ample competing substitutions, or inelastic demand may face consumer pushback on price increases.&nbsp;
Here are the five stocks that will suffer the most in a trade war with China.
Now, tariffs are simply import taxes charged on goods as they arrive at the border. A common misconception is that the exporting country pays tariffs, but tariffs are actually paid by the company importing the product as it crosses the border. Charging tariffs to the exporter would create a cluster headache as the government would be forced to collect taxes in various currencies; instead, the tax is charged to the imports and collected in US dollars.
Both left- and right-leaning economists agree that consumers eventually bear the tariff burden as companies pass on the cost increases to their customers. The companies that can least shift the burden to consumers that way are the ones that will suffer the most from tariffs.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hasbro Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HAS#NASDAQ">HAS</a>)</h2>
Thankfully, the holiday season has come and gone because toys and games could be getting more expensive in the next few months. Hasbro is a 100-year-old entertainment holding company that owns popular brands like Milton Bradley, Parker Bros, and Wizards of the Coast. The company makes popular games like Twister, Battleship, and Monopoly, along with toy lines like Nerf, Transformers, Power Rangers, GI Joe, and Play-Doh.

Hasbro is on our sell list over rival Mattel due to its heavy reliance on Chinese factories to produce its goods, despite attempts to shift production to India or Vietnam over the last few years. Gross profits have been in annual decline since 2021, and while analysts are still primarily bullish, cracks are beginning to form. In January, Stifel cut its price target on HAS shares from $82 to $77.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>)</h2>
PDD Holdings is the United States equity of Chinese retail conglomerate Pinduoduo, which operates the discount merchandiser Temu. If you have a social media account, you've likely seen ads for Temu, which offers incredibly low pricing on a variety of merchandise, including clothes, sports jerseys, handbags, and other apparel.

Temu is one of the companies that will be heavily impacted by the decision to remove the de minimus exemption on packages arriving from China or Hong Kong. The exemption calls for a refrain from duties and taxes on merchandise received at the border valued under $800, which would describe nearly all the orders arriving on US shores from Chinese retailers like Temu. (Note: Trump reversed the exemption decision late Friday.) Retaliatory tariffs are expected from China as well, and analysts from JP Morgan, Benchmark, and Jeffries have all reduced their PDD price targets since election day in the US.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>)</h2>
Even megacap tech stocks like Apple aren't safe from broad tariffs, especially considering how reliant the iPhone maker is on Chinese sales. And while putting a $3.5 trillion company on a sell list might seem bold, Apple has been under the microscope for the last few months. AAPL shares had a solid 2024 run, jumping from $165 in April to $260 by Christmas. But the company has started 2025 stuck in molasses, and shares are already down more than 8% year-to-date.

Chinese iPhone sales are the obvious cause for concern. During its recent earnings release, Apple reported that iPhone sales in China declined 18% in Q4 2024, while competitor Huawei saw a more than 15% bump in smartphone sales in the same period. Apple may be forced to offer new discounts on iPhones to restore sales growth, and the looming threat of tariff retaliation could put even more pressure on Tim Cook's tech giant.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">PVH Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PVH#NYSE">PVH</a>)</h2>
PVH has been dropping like a stone since cracking the $140 mark in December. The $140 price was the highest in over six years for PVH, but headwinds have rapidly materialized for the beleaguered apparel maker.

These tariffs will significantly impact production as PVH has 128 factories in China, 40 more than the next closest hub in Vietnam. The company has manufacturing locations in more than 30 nations, but the Chinese manufacturing output is crucial due to the high quantity of skilled workers employed. Nearshoring or reshoring wouldn't resolve this labor issue, and high-quality PVH brands like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger should see the most significant price increases.
To make matters worse, China's Ministry of Commerce has now added PVH to its unreliable entities list and claims its practices "interfered with the operations of Chinese companies." Analysts at Wells Fargo agree with the concerns as they downgraded the stock from Overweight to Equal Weight last week and dropped their price target from $130 to $105.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Under Armour Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UA#NYSE">UA</a>)</h2>
Under Armour makes sports apparel and footwear, and its strong manufacturing presence in China has placed it squarely in the crosshairs of a trade war. UA executives have warned about pressure from tariffs since Donald Trump's election night victory. Under Armour has stated that only 15% of its production remains in China, but the company's tight margins and competition could spell problems for its bottom line.

UA beat on earnings and revenue in the most recent February 6 conference call, but disappointing guidance sent shares tumbling. The stock lost more than 6.5% in the week of the earnings release as investors digested the guidance figures and tariff threats. No analyst covering the stock has updated their coverage since June 2024, but UA stock is clearly facing some serious headwinds as 2025 rolls along.

Barclays Maintains Overweight on PVH, Lowers Price Target to $98

President Donald Trump signed Tuesday a directive restoring his "maximum pressure" sanctions campaign on Iran and doubled down on his trade stance with China, dismissing Beijing's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/02/43462165/china-strikes-retaliatory-measures-against-us-following-trumps-10-tariffs-its-much-less-than-proportional-analyst-says">retaliatory tariffs as "fine."</a>
Speaking at the Oval Office, Trump signed a memorandum aimed at ramping up economic and political pressure on Iran by reviving sanctions that were previously imposed during his first term.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Signs ‘Very Tough' Iran Sanctions Order</h3>
Framing the policy as a direct response to Tehran's nuclear ambitions and support for militant groups, Trump said the directive would have prevented the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and said Iran is now "too close" <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/02/43469234/trump-prepares-maximum-pressure-on-iran-oil-jumps-above-73-energy-stocks-rally">to developing nuclear weapons.</a>
The sanctions are designed to curb Iran's nuclear program and limit its influence across the region. 
Trump left the door open for diplomacy. "We will see whether or not we can arrange or work out a deal with Iran and everybody can live together," he said. "Maybe that's possible, maybe it's not."
When asked about Iran's nuclear program, Trump insisted that preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon remains his top priority.
"With me, it's very simple. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon," he said. "We don't want to be tough on Iran. We don't want to be tough on anybody. But they just can't have a nuclear weapon."
He also addressed concerns that Iran and its allied militias could target him or his former officials in retaliation for the U.S. killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020. "If they did that, they would be obliterated," Trump said. "That would be the end."
Trump said he&#8217;s left clear instructions for how the U.S. should respond to any such attack. "I've left instructions. If they do it, they get obliterated. There won't be anything left," he said.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Trump Doubles Down On China</h3>
Despite the escalating trade tensions, Trump brushed off concerns about China's response. 
"That's fine," he said. "We're going to do very well against China and against everybody else."
Beijing responded to Trump's latest 10% tariff on Chinese imports with its own countermeasures, imposing new tariffs of 10%-15% on select U.S. goods, including coal, liquefied natural gas, crude oil, agricultural machinery and vehicles.
&#8220;They&#8217;ve taken advantage of the Biden administration like I&#8217;ve never seen. The deficit with China is about a trillion dollars, they&#8217;re using our money to build their military,&#8221; Trump stated.
When asked whether he had spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping or planned to negotiate a resolution, Trump was noncommittal.
"We'll speak to him at the appropriate time," he said. "I'm in no rush."

Trump Confirms Maximum Economic Pressure On Iran, Calls China's Tariff Retaliation 'Fine'

U.S. stocks advanced midday Tuesday, demonstrating resilience despite escalating geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties between the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">world&#8217;s two largest economies.</a>
China responded to President Donald Trump&#8216;s 10% import tariff with targeted countermeasures, including restrictions on key mineral exports to the U.S. and tariffs on American energy products.
Beijing is raising tariffs by 10%-15% on select U.S. imports, including coal, liquefied natural gas, crude oil, agricultural machinery and vehicles. Additionally, China added PVH Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PVH#NYSE">PVH</a>) and Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ILMN#NASDAQ">ILMN</a>) to its &#8220;Unreliable Entity List,&#8221; citing the need to &#8220;safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests,&#8221; and opened an antitrust investigation on Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>)(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>).
Market participants had anticipated a call between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, but media reports indicated the conversation would not happen today.
The trade developments had an immediate impact on oil markets, with West Texas Intermediate crude futures plunging 3% overnight to as low as $70 per barrel. 
Yet, prices rebounded sharply Tuesday morning following reports that Trump is considering issuing a memorandum aimed at inflicting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/02/43469234/trump-prepares-maximum-pressure-on-iran-oil-jumps-above-73-energy-stocks-rally">maximum economic damage on Iran</a>, potentially leading to a sharp decline in Iranian oil production.
Energy stocks outperformed on the day, while utilities lagged. 
Among individual stocks, Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) rocketed 22% after posting strong earnings and a revenue beat. 
In the commodities market, gold added more than 1%, extending its all-time high, and silver jumped 2.2%. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) declined 2% to $99,000.

Illumina, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ILMN#NASDAQ">ILMN</a>) shares are trading lower on Tuesday after China added the company to its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/43457639">unreliable entities list</a>.
The Details: According to Reuters, the Ministry of Commerce placed Illumina as well as PVH Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PVH#NYSE">PVH</a>) on its unreliable entities list after the companies took &#8220;discriminatory measures against Chinese enterprises.&#8221; Furthermore, the companies, &#8220;damaged&#8221; the rights and interests of Chinese corporations. 
Since the companies have been added to the list, China may impose fines, revoke work permits for foreign staff, or take other punitive actions. China makes up approximately 7% of Illumina&#8217;s sales.
Li Yong, a senior research fellow at the China Association of International Trade, told the <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202502/1327821.shtml">Global Times</a>, &#8220;When China adds any company to the Unreliable Entity List, it is very prudent and would not add any company to the list without evidence.&#8221;
What Else: Illumina is anticipated to release 2024 fiscal-year fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday after the market closes. Analysts estimate earnings per share of 92 cents and revenue of $1.08 billion, per data from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pro/">Benzinga Pro</a>.
In its preliminary earnings report, the company approximated revenue of $1.10 billion and earnings per share between 91 cents and 93 cents. Furthermore, the company announced cash flow from operations of about $1.21 billion and free cash flow of approximately $1.07 billion.

China responds to the across-the-board 10% tariffs imposed by Donald Trump&#8216;s administration with targeted measures on a range of U.S. energy imports and restrictions on key minerals exports, officially reopening a new chapter in the trade war between the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">world&#8217;s two largest economies.</a>
&#8220;The unilateral increase in tariffs by the United States seriously violates the rules of the World Trade Organization,&#8221; the Ministry of Finance of the People&#8217;s Republic of China stated Tuesday. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Happened</h3>
As the U.S. implemented a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports, China responded on Feb. 4 with a series of countermeasures.
These included:
<ol>
<li>Raising tariffs by 10-15% on certain U.S. imports such as coal, liquified natural gas, crude oil, agricultural machinery and vehicles.</li>
<li>Imposing export restrictions on key minerals like tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, molybdenum, and indium, along with their related metallic compounds.</li>
<li>Adding two U.S. companies, PVH Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PVH#NYSE">PVH</a>) and Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ILMN#NASDAQ">ILMN</a>), to its Unreliable Entity List in order to &#8220;safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests.&#8221; According to China, these companies &#8220;violated the principles of normal market transactions, interrupted normal transactions with Chinese enterprises, and took discriminatory measures against Chinese enterprises.&#8221;&nbsp;</li>

According to an official statement, China&#8217;s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods will take effect on Feb. 10, while the export ban on critical minerals has already been enforced.
The&nbsp;Executive Order&nbsp;signed by Trump on Feb. 1 stated that if China were to retaliate by imposing additional tariffs on US goods, the 10% tariff rate might be raised further.&nbsp;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why It Matters</h3>
Goldman Sachs economist Andrew Tilton indicates that China&#8217;s newly announced retaliatory tariffs cover a much narrower range of goods compared to the broad 10% U.S. tariff on Chinese imports. 
The combination of tariffs, export restrictions, entity list designations and antitrust investigations suggests a more strategic and coordinated policy response than during the 2018-19 trade war, according to the expert.
Goldman Sachs&#8217; estimates indicate that the U.S. accounts for a relatively small share of China&#8217;s imports in the targeted energy sectors. In 2024, China imported $4.5 billion worth of coal and LNG from the U.S., representing just 5% of its total imports for these products. For crude oil, U.S. exports to China totaled $9.4 billion, making up only 3% of China&#8217;s total crude imports.
Based on the investment bank&#8217;s calculations, the impact of China&#8217;s counter tariffs is &#8220;much-less than proportional,&#8221; as China is effectively imposing an additional 12% tariff on $14 billion in U.S. goods, compared to the U.S. implementing a 10% tariff on $525 billion worth of Chinese products.
Yet, &#8220;the future path of US-China trade conflicts remains highly uncertain, and reactions from the US to China's retaliation, the potential Trump-Xi phone call, and PBOC&#8217;s daily USDCNY fixing in the coming days are key events to watch,&#8221; Tilton says. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions </h3>
The Chinese yuan gained marginal ground against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, up 0.2% by 8:15 a.m. in New York. 
China&#8217;s trade measures weighed on energy commodities, with futures on WTI and natural gas down 1.7% and 4%, respectively. Gold prices rose 0.3% to $2,830 per ounce, setting new all-time highs. 
Futures on major U.S. indices were mixed during Tuesday premarket trading, with contracts on the S&amp;P 500 up 0.3% while those on the Dow edging 0.1% lower. 
US-listed Chinese stocks rallied in the premarket. Shares of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) rose 2%, PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>) surged 2.1% and JD.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>) rallied 2.6%. 
The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) was 1.8% higher.

China Strikes Retaliatory Measures Against US Following Trump's 10% Tariffs: It's 'Much-Less Than Proportional,' Analyst Says

U.S. stock futures were mostly lower this morning, with the Dow futures falling around 100 points on Tuesday.
Shares of PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PYPL#NASDAQ">PYPL</a>) fell sharply in today's pre-market trading following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/PYPL/earnings">fourth-quarter earnings</a>.
PayPal reported quarterly earnings of $1.19 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $1.12 per share. The company reported quarterly sales of $8.366 billion which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $8.256 billion.
PayPal's board also authorized a $15 billion stock repurchase program.
PayPal shares fell 6.8% to $83.38 in the pre-market trading session.

U.S. stock futures were trading lower on Tuesday after Monday&#8217;s decline as the new administration&#8217;s tariffs continued to spook the market.
On Monday, Mexico&#8217;s president Claudia Sheinbaum reached a deal with President Donald Trump to delay tariffs by increasing Mexico's military presence on the US border. Later, after a call between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, tariffs on Canada were also suspended for 30 days.
All major index futures were down. Google parent Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>), Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>), Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PFE#NYSE">PFE</a>), PepsiCo Inc. December U.S. construction spending rose 0.5%, and the January ISM manufacturing PMI increased to 50.9.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors declined, led by consumer discretionary, information technology, and industrials, while utilities and consumer staples gained.

&#8220;History has shown that tariffs are rarely viewed as a net positive for equities, and while they could lead to a temporary bump in inflation and price levels, the Fed is unlikely to respond to a one-time inflationary shock,&#8221; he added.
While Mexican and Canadian tariffs were paused, Siegel, who is the senior economist at WisdomTree and a former professor at the University of Pennsylvania added that &#8220;Trump's new tariffs are not smart either economically or politically&#8221;.
&#8220;The political impact is likely to be very negative for Trump's program, as the rise in prices (gasoline and some food items) will have high visibility in the mainstream media and put pressure on some legislators,&#8221; he added.

What Happened: China claimed <a href="https://news.futunn.com/flash/18389865/department-of-commerce-add-the-us-pvh-group-and-immena?level=2&amp;data_ticket=1738646473129916">in</a> its press release that these two companies have disrupted normal market transactions and tried to harm the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.
The specific measures to be taken against the companies have not yet been disclosed. However, they are expected to be in line with the &#8220;Regulations on the List of Unreliable Entities,&#8221; which allow for restrictions on trade, investment, and other business activities.

Why It Matters: China&#8217;s State Administration for Market Regulation also announced on Tuesday that it will be investigating Alphabet Inc.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) Google for alleged anti-monopoly practices. On Monday, President Donald Trump postponed his threat of imposing 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada at the last minute, agreeing to a 30-day delay in exchange for concessions regarding border and crime enforcement with the two neighboring countries. However, there was no similar pause on the 10% tariffs imposed on China.
Illumina fell 3.89% on Robinhood overnight, whereas PVH had ended over 7% lower on Monday.
