US Stock Futures Up, RIM Shares Tumble In Pre-Market Trading

US stock futures are higher this morning. Shares of Research in Motion Ltd RIMM dropped in pre-market trading after the company cut its earnings forecast. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 21 points to 11,920.00 and futures on the S&P 500 stock index rose 2.30 points to 1,265.80. Nasdaq 100 futures surged 4.25 points to 2,199.75. US stocks closed mostly higher on Thursday, with the Dow Jones industrial average gaining 0.54% to 11,961.52, the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rising 0.18% to 1,267.64 and the NASDAQ composite index dipping 0.29% to 2,623.70. Data on the University of Michigan consumer-sentiment survey for June will be released at 9:55 a.m. ET and leading indicators for May will be released at 10 a.m. ET. Shares of ING Groep NV ING gained about 2.5% in pre-market trading after Capital One Financial Corp COF agreed to purchase ING Direct from ING Groep for $9 billion in cash and stock. Shares of Research In Motion tumbled about 15% in pre-market trading after the company cut its earnings forecast for the year and announced its plans to cut an unspecified number of jobs. RIMM reported its quarterly net income at $695 million, or $1.33 per share, versus a net income of $769 million, or $1.38 per share, in the year-ago period. Its revenue surged 16% to $4.9 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.32 per share on revenue of $5.15 billion. The company shipped 13.2 million smartphone units and 500,000 units of its new Playbook tablet. Analysts were expecting smartphone shipments of 13.3 million and Playbook shipments of 436,000. For the fiscal year ending next February, RIMM now projects earnings in the range of $5.25 to $6 per share, down from its earlier forecast of $7.50 per share. Analysts expected earnings of $6.31 per share. Lender Processing Services Inc LPS issued a weaker-than-expected quarterly forecast. LPS now projects FQ2 adjusted earnings of $0.54 to $0.56 per share, down from analysts' estimates of $0.80 per share in the period. Shares of Pandora Media Inc P dropped below its initial public offering price on its second day of trading. Most Asian markets ended lower, with Japan's Nikkei Stock Average dipping 0.6363%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 moving up 0.10% and China's Shanghai Composite dropping 0.77%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 1.1746% and India's Sensex dipped 0.71%. European markets were lower today. The STOXX Europe 600 Index has dropped 0.82%, London's FTSE 100 Index moved down 0.30%, German DAX 30 index fell 0.57% and France CAC 40 index declined 0.89%. Greece's Socialist government appointed Evangelos Venizelos as the new finance minister. Gold futures for August delivery dropped $4.10 to $1,525.70 an ounce. Crude-oil futures for July delivery declined $1.73 to $93.22 a barrel. The US dollar index (DXY) gained 0.2% to 75.606. Read more from Benzinga's Markets.
