San Francisco Mayoral Candidate Proposes Ban On New Marijuana Dispensaries

San Francisco Supervisor Ahsha Safaí, who is also a mayoral candidate for 2024, proposed a ban on new marijuana dispensaries in the city.

Citing safety concerns and an unregulated market, Safaí's controversial move has ignited a heated debate within the city.

According to The SF Standard, the city's cannabis landscape has been the subject of both praise and scrutiny since the legalization of recreational use in 2016. However, Safaí says it's time to reassess the situation.

Highlighting the abundance of existing cannabis retail storefronts, Safaí expressed his concerns over the alarming rise in break-ins and public safety issues.

“Let’s be clear—we have no shortage of cannabis retail storefronts, and many are suffering because of brazen break-ins, public safety concerns, and an unregulated market that is not facing proper enforcement.”

His proposal calls for a temporary moratorium on new dispensary applications, urging City Hall to prioritize processing existing equity applications.

Approximately 30 cannabis dispensaries and 30 medical cannabis stores already operate in San Francisco.

Critics argue that the proposed ban could hinder industry growth and stifle competition.

According to supervisor Rafael Mandelman, "Cannabis businesses create good jobs for San Franciscans and provide safe, regulated products to their customers.”

The proposal faces its first hearing on May 25 with the Public Safety and Neighborhood Services Committee, leaving the future of cannabis expansion in the city uncertain.
