The upcoming 2024 election could end up being a repeat of the 2020 election, which saw Donald Trump and Joe Biden face off. Biden ultimately won the election and was sworn in as the 46th president in January 2021.
A new poll shows that Biden continues to lead in a hypothetical race against the two candidates ahead of the 2024 election.
What Happened: The 2024 election has been viewed as a three-person race between Trump, Biden and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for months. The betting odds have favored these three candidates to become the next president of the United States.
In a recent hypothetical election poll for the 2024 matchup, Trump overtook Biden, reversing the trend of several months during which Biden consistently ranked above both DeSantis and Trump in separate potential matchups.
Two weeks ago, Trump surpassed Biden in the polls, according to a Morning Consult survey of registered voters, indicating a shift in public sentiment.
Trump saw a 44% to 41% lead in the hypothetical rematch of the 2020 presidential election, which was the first time Trump ranked ahead of Biden since polling began in December 2022.
But now, two weeks later, Biden is back on top in the hypothetical poll. The latest Morning Consult poll shows Biden getting 43% of the vote and Trump getting 42% of the vote. The other 10% and 5% chose other candidates and don’t know, respectively.
In a hypothetical matchup between Biden and DeSantis, Biden came out on top, getting 43% of the vote versus the 38% for the Florida governor. Biden’s lead grew to 5% in the latest poll, compared to a 2% margin in the same poll two weeks ago.

Why It’s Important: The 2020 election saw Biden defeat Trump with a 306 to 232 margin in the Electoral College. Biden also won the popular vote with 51.3% support, compared to 46.9% for Trump.
Biden surging back ahead of Trump in the hypothetical matchup comes as Trump continues to dominate the Republican primary Morning Consult poll with a 56% to 17% lead over DeSantis. The latest poll saw the lowest support figure for DeSantis since tracking began in December 2022.
Biden saw his approval rating hit his highest since August 2021 in a report released near the end of June.
