Biden Grows Lead Over Trump, DeSantis In 2024 Election Polls: Can New Ad Campaign Push Margin Higher?

Zinger Key Points
  • A look at hypothetical 2024 election matches between Biden and Trump and Biden and DeSantis.
  • Biden has had a lead in nearly every poll over both candidates.

The 2024 presidential election could end up being a rematch of the 2020 election, which saw voters choose between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Currently serving as the 46th president, Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election.

Here’s a look at what a weekly poll says about a potential rematch and how Biden matches up in a hypothetical match-up versus Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

What Happened: President Joe Biden has been the consensus nominee for the Democratic Party in the 2024 presidential election. If Biden wins his party’s nominee, he will likely face off against Trump or DeSantis, the two candidates that have dominated GOP polls for months.

The weekly Morning Consult poll has Biden defeating both Trump and DeSantis in separate hypothetical matchups, proposed to nationally registered voters.

Voters gave Biden a 44% to 41% advantage against Trump in the latest hypothetical matchup. This marks a gain for Biden of one point and a loss of one point for Trump from last week’s poll. Nine percent said they would vote for someone else and 5% said they were unsure who they would select.

In a matchup between Biden and DeSantis, Biden won with a 44% to 39% advantage. Eleven percent said they would vote for someone else and 7% said they were unsure who they would vote for. This marked an improvement for Biden, who saw a 43% to 39% advantage in last week’s poll.

Why It’s Important: A Morning Consult poll in June saw Trump take a brief 44% to 41% lead over Biden, which was his first lead since the poll began in December 2022.

Outside of the one poll that saw Trump pass Biden, the current president has maintained a lead of mostly one to two points over Trump.

The new lead of three points over Trump could mark a change of pace for Biden and comes as he is getting ready to launch an advertising blitz during the upcoming NFL season.

As reported by Benzinga previously, Biden is airing an ad highlighting his economic progress and strengths during the opening NFL kickoff game on Thursday, Sept. 7. The matchup between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs airs on NBC and Peacock, units of Comcast Corporation CMCSA.

The ad will air in Michigan and several swing states. Biden’s campaign is also planning to air more advertisements during the 2023 NFL season.

The 2020 election saw Biden defeat Trump with a 306 to 232 margin in the Electoral College. Biden also won the popular vote with 51.3% support, compared to 46.9% for Trump.

Trump continued to dominate the GOP field in recent polls, with the latest Morning Consult poll showing a 45-point lead for the former president over the Republican competition.

Despite numerous indictments and federal charges and skipping the first Republican primary debate, Trump has not seen his support among GOP voters drop, setting the table for a potential rematch with Biden at the polls in 2024.
