Trump Can Brush Off Legal Challenges, Defeat Biden In 2024 Election, Republican Voters In Key State Poll Say

Zinger Key Points
  • A look at a new Iowa 2024 election poll shows a strong lead for Donald Trump amongst Republicans.
  • Despite legal challenges, many Republican voters think Trump can win the 2024 presidential election.

A potential rematch of Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the two main 2020 presidential candidates, is likely making its way to voters for the 2024 presidential election.

A new state poll showed the impact of the legal challenges facing Trump ahead of the election.

What Happened: Trump was indicted multiple times in 2023 and faces numerous charges in several ongoing cases ahead of the 2024 election.

With some questioning if the legal challenges would have an impact on how people are voting in primaries and the general election, the state of Iowa polled Republican voters to get the answers.

A new Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll asked Republican voters how they would be voting in the 2024 election and if the legal challenges against Trump would have any impact.

Voters were asked, "Which of the following better describes your view of Donald Trump's legal challenges?"

The results were:

Donald Trump can win an election against Joe Biden, regardless of his legal challenges: 65%

Donald Trump's legal challenges will make it nearly impossible for him to win an election against Joe Biden: 32%

Not Sure: 4%

The poll also asked Iowa Republican voters what they think about Donald Trump and the future of the Republican Party. Here were the results:

Republican Party should continue to be led by Donald Trump: 39%

Republican Party needs a new leader with better personal behavior and a different approach: 32%

Donald Trump was a good president, but it is time to consider other leaders: 28%

None of These: 1%

Why It's Important: The results of the poll and the minimal impact of the legal challenges could suggest there was a large anti-Joe Biden play from Republican voters.

"Anybody could beat Joe Biden potentially, is what they may be saying," pollster J. Ann Selzer said. "These data would support the idea that ‘Joe Biden's just not that tough.' So regardless of whether there are legal challenges, Donald Trump can beat him."

Among voters who picked Trump as their first choice among Republican candidates, 94% said the former president could defeat Biden despite legal challenges.

Of voters who selected another Republican candidate, 42% said that Trump could defeat Biden in the 2024 election despite the legal challenges.

In Iowa, Trump continued to hold a lead among Republican voters for the GOP nomination. Here were the results:

Donald Trump: 43%

Ron DeSantis: 16%

Nikki Haley: 16%

Tim Scott: 7%

Vivek Ramaswamy: 4%

Chris Christie: 4%

Trump's 27-point lead in Iowa trails his lead in other states and national polls. The most recent Morning Consult national Republican voter poll showed Trump with a 49-point lead over DeSantis and a majority of support (62%).

Iowa continued to be an important state given its early position in the 2024 election cycle. The state voted for a Republican candidate for president in the last two general elections.
