The 2024 presidential election could end up being a rematch of the 2020 election race, which saw voters choose between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, an election that Biden won.
A weekly election poll showed a potential matchup between the two past presidents and the results might be surprising after recent events.
What Happened: President Biden has been the favorite to win the Democratic Party nomination in the 2024 election for many months.
With Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announcing he would no longer run as a Democratic candidate, Biden's lead will most likely grow ahead of the primary.
There remained some worry Kennedy Jr. running as a third-party candidate could take potential votes away from both Biden and Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
If Biden wins the Democratic nomination, he will likely face off against Trump in the general election. Trump has been dominant over Republican candidates and in a recent poll had a 48-point lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The weekly Morning Consult poll asked registered voters who they would select in hypothetical matchups of Trump vs. Biden and Biden vs. DeSantis.
In this week's poll, Biden received 42% of the vote, trailing Trump at 44% of the vote. The remaining voters selected Someone Else (11%) and Don't Know (4%).
This marked a new lead for Trump, which comes after ties between the two candidates in the past two polls.
In a matchup between Biden and DeSantis, Biden won with a 41% to 39% advantage. Voters also selected Someone Else (13%) and Don't Know (7%) as options. This marked a decline for Biden, who had 43% in the previous poll and a four-point lead over DeSantis.

Why It's Important: Over the past seven weeks, Biden has been tied with Trump four times, ahead of the former president twice and now ranked behind the former president in the latest.
This marked a big change from past months that saw Biden have a lead of one to two percentage points in most weeks since polling began in December.
It was only nine weeks ago Biden had a three-point lead over Trump in one of his biggest advantages in recent months, before seeing momentum shift towards Trump in recent weeks.
Biden and Trump being tied in the overall poll of national voters came as another Morning Consult poll showed Trump having a lead over Biden in several key swing states. In that poll, Trump led Biden with a 47% to 43% margin and ranked ahead of the president with both male and female voters and across every age demographic in the poll.
The results of the poll also happened during Trump's civil fraud trial in the state of New York. Trump's two oldest sons testified last week before the latest poll was conducted. The next poll will include results from voters after watching Trump testify Monday in court in the hearing.
Biden saw his lead over DeSantis continue to fall in the latest poll, with a two-point lead one of the lowest in recent weeks.
Biden had a four-point advantage over DeSantis in the prior poll and a lead of five points two weeks ago.
The 2024 presidential election is officially less than one year away with a date of Nov. 5.
