Asia Markets Mixed, Europe Dips; Crude Oil Hovers Around $70 - Global Markets Today While US Was Sleeping

On Tuesday, January 2nd, the U.S. stock markets closed mixed, with S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closing in the red, dragged down by Apple's downgrade and big-tech losses amid rising treasury yields.

In economic data, December's S&P Global manufacturing PMI fell to 47.9 from November's 49.4, while construction spending in November grew by 0.4%, hitting $2,050.1 billion annually.

Healthcare topped S&P 500 sectors driven by Moderna's 13.1% jump after an upgrade and positive 2025 sales outlook.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.07%, closing at 37,715.04. The S&P 500 was down 0.57% to 4,742.83, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 1.63%, ending the trading session at 14,765.94.

  • In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 closed Wednesday's session lower by 1.37%, ending at 7,523.20, led by losses in the IT, Gold, and A-REITs sectors.

  • Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was down 0.94%, concluding the day at 16,626.50.

  • Germany's DAX slid 0.59%.
  • France's CAC declined 1.04%.

  • Crude Oil WTI was trading lower by 0.40% at $70.09/bbl, and Brent was down 0.20% at $75.76/bbl.
  • Natural Gas declined 0.04% to $2.566.
