Asia And Europe Markets Mixed, Crude Oil Dips, Gold Remains Above $2,050 - Global Markets Today While US Was Sleeping

On Tuesday, January 30th, U.S. stock markets closed mixed, Nasdaq Composite declined amid expectations of several major corporate earnings reports and the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting.

In economic data, November’s S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller index rose 5.4% year-over-year, FHFA house prices were up 0.3% from October, and job openings increased to 9.026 million in December, up 101,000.

Six of the 11 S&P 500 sector indexes recorded gains, with the financial sector at the forefront and the energy sector closely behind.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.35% and closed at 38,467.31, the S&P 500 declined 0.06% to 4,924.97, while the Nasdaq Composite slid 0.76%, ending the session at 15,509.90.

Asian Markets Today

  • On Wednesday, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index closed the session higher by 0.57% at 36,286.71, led by gains in the Precision Instruments, Shipbuilding, and Insurance sectors.
  • Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 was up 1.06% and closed at 7,680.70, led by gains in the A-REITs, Utilities and Energy sectors.
  • India’s Nifty 50 closed higher by 0.95% at 21,725.70, and the Nifty 500 gained 1.16% to 19,802.10. 
  • China’s Shanghai Composite slipped 1.48% to 2,788.55, while the Shenzhen CSI 300 was down 0.91%, closing at 3,215.35.
  • Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index slipped 1.39%, concluding the day at 15,485.07.

  • The European STOXX 600 index was up 0.08%.
  • Germany’s DAX declined 0.12%.
  • France’s CAC rose 0.04%.
  • The U.K.’s FTSE 100 traded higher by 0.13%.
