Biden Vs. Trump Matchup In New Poll Shows Incumbent's Lead Swelling, But Nearly 25% Of Voters Don't Want Either As President

Zinger Key Points
  • Just a handful of competitive states typically tilt the balance in U.S. electoral college will ultimately decide who will emerge victorious.
  • In the 2020 election in which Biden emerged victorious, only two-thirds of eligible voters turned up for voting.

President Joe Biden surged further ahead of his predecessor Donald Trump in a hypothetical matchup for the 2024 election, new poll results published on Tuesday showed.

The Equation: Biden garnered support from 41% of registered voters, a four-point lead over Trump, who mustered only 37% support, Reuters said.

In Reuters’ March poll, Biden had a far less one-point lead over his Republican rival.

The results were based on a five-day poll that concluded Monday, with the number of respondents being 833 registered voters and a margin of error of four percentage points.

Reflecting indecision among voters, 22% of registered voters said they were undecided, leaning toward third-party candidates or might not vote.

With a sizeable number of voters not backing either of the two mainstream candidates and the lead of one over the other matching the margin of error of the survey, the presidential race this time around has become too close to call. It’s here the results from swing states play a key role.

“Just a handful of competitive states typically tilt the balance in the U.S. electoral college, which ultimately decides who wins a presidential election,” the report said.

When the responses of both registered and unregistered voters were taken into account, Biden’s lead contracted to one point. The Reuters report said the president’s lead among registered voters was important, given they are the ones who are most likely to vote. In the 2020 election in which Biden emerged victorious, only two-thirds of eligible voters turned up to vote.

The Pushbacks: Biden, though in the lead, is stymied by a host of issues, including his poor presidential approval rating, skepticism regarding his mental acuity to discharge duties as president and his handling of domestic issues such as immigration and international relations.

Trump, on the other hand, is finding himself in a legal mess. While the former president is facing a huge financial liability by way of fines charged against him in his civil cases, he is also facing four criminal cases. The first of the four criminal cases over hush money payment is set to go on trial on April 15.

The need to appear in courtrooms could interfere with Trump’s campaign schedule. His campaign team has not been successful with raising sufficient funding that could come in handy in what is projected to be a tightly-contested election.
