In Trump Vs. Biden Race, Big Lead For One Candidate In Iowa Seen As 'Bad Sign' For The Other In Key Battleground States: Poll

Donald Trump’s legal travails may not have caused much dent to his election prospects, at least in the state of Iowa, poll results released Monday showed.

The Matchup: Trump received the support of 50% of likely voters from Iowa in a poll conducted two weeks after he was pronounced guilty in the New York hush-money case, a Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll showed. The survey was conducted on behalf of Des Moines by Selzer & Co., considered a polling authority in the state. The pollster interviewed 806 Iowans ages 18 or older from June 9-14 for the purpose. President Joe Biden trailed Trump by a double-digit margin (28 points), as he collected merely 32% support.

Robert Kennedy Jr, who has qualified to contest in the Hawkeye state, was backed by 9% of Iowans, while 2% sided with Libertarian presidential candidate Chase Oliver. Meanwhile, 3% said they would vote for someone else, 1% said they would not vote and 3% said they weren’t sure.

More Biden voters are firm in their choice (81%), with only 19% saying they can be persuaded. On the other hand, a more modest 76% of Trump supporters have already made up their minds and 24% said they could still be persuaded.

Commenting on the numbers, the Guardian said Iowa has been leaning toward red in recent presidential cycles. But the big lead in the state could be a bad sign for Biden’s support in other midwestern states such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, which are considered battleground states, it added.

“While Iowa is not considered a swing state, there has in the past been some correlation between Trump's lead there, and his support in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan – all states that Biden is targeting to win,” the report said.

“But there is a big caveat: we are still a ways away from the November election, and though Selzer is considered the best pollster in the Hawkeye state, there's plenty of time for voters' sentiments to change.”.

Approval Ratings: The survey found that President Biden’s approval rating slid a point from February to 28%. A whopping 67% disapproved of his job as president and 5% said they weren’t sure. Party-wise break-up showed that 77% of the Democrats approved, while 97% of the Republicans disapproved.

Among the independents, 69% disapproved of Biden’s handling of his job as president and merely 24% approved of him.

Biden fared better with those 65 years old and higher. Despite having an edge among this demographic group, his job as president hasn’t cut much ice with them. 52% said they disapproved of him compared to 42% who approved.

In the voters younger than 35 years, which is Biden’s worst demographic group, just 15% approved of him and 76% disapproved.
