Biden To Accuse Russia Of 2024 Election Interference, Expert Says Voting Process Tough To Tamper With: 'Election Infrastructure Has Never Been More Secure'

Zinger Key Points
  • Russia has been accused of seeking to interfere in past U.S. presidential elections.
  • A new report links Russia to efforts to influence the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.

President Joe Biden will accuse Russia of seeking to interfere with the 2024 election, according to a new report.

Here are the details.

What Happened: Biden, who is no longer running for reelection, he could make a major statement on Wednesday with accusations that Russia is seeking to influence the outcome of the race for the White House.

Russia is using Kremlin-run media and online platforms to share disinformation with U.S. voters ahead of the 2024 election according to a report from CNN.

Biden is expected to share the accusations and announce moves to fight off the election interferences attempt during a Wednesday speech, CNN said. Biden and the White House will publicly condemn the actions from Russia along with the U.S. Justice Department announcing the action it will take against Russia.

Among the Russian media outlets targeted is RT, a state media network formerly known as Russia Today. RT was previously found to have tried to interfere with the 2016 election and was registered as a foreign agent by the Justice Department in 2017.

The Social Design Agency is also expected to be named Wednesday by the White House as a company involved in Russia’s efforts. The company was previously sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for allegations of running fake news sites on behalf of the Russian government.

Attorney General Merrick Garland will host a meeting for the Justice Department's Election Threats Task Force Wednesday with several senior law enforcement leaders in attendance, including FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Why It's Important: The United States previously accused Iran of trying to hack the accounts of former President Donald Trump, the GOP’s 2024 presidential nominee, and Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election.

Elections in the United States have been on high alert since Russian efforts to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Along with allegations against Russia and Iran, the CNN report said U.S. officials are also closely monitoring the activity of China ahead of the 2024 election. Chinese leader Xi Jinping promised Biden in November 2023 the country would not interfere in the 2024 election.

U.S. officials remain confident in the voting integrity of the 2024 election, according to the report. Despite multiple challenges, the American voting system is said to be difficult to tamper with and no successful efforts have been reported of changing vote tallies.

"Election infrastructure has never been more secure," U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Director Jen Easterly said.

CNN reports that 97% of 2024 election voters in the U.S. will cast a ballot with a verified paper record.

The CNN report and White House allegations come months after Microsoft Corporation MSFT warned that a resurgence in Russian online influence operations could be targeting the 2024 presidential election.

Former Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said in September 2023 that Russian President Vladimir Putin was likely to attempt to interfere with the 2024 election based on his history of doing so.

"I fear that the Russians improve themselves to be quite adept at interfering, and if he has a chance, he'll do it again," Clinton said.

The United States is putting increased emphasis on cybersecurity efforts ahead of the 2024 election.

The latest commentary on Russia's involvement in the 2024 election could make the relationship between the U.S. and Russia an increasingly important topic for Trump and Harris to address. Russia could be one of the key topics addressed during the presidential debate on Sept. 10, which is set to be hosted by Walt Disney Company DIS unit ABC.
