The Election Issue No One Saw Coming: Trump's Weed Gamble In Swing States

Zinger Key Points
  • Recent polling shows that between 60% and 65% of voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin back adult-use legalization.
  • Trump could be gambling on winning over undecided and moderate voters.

Donald Trump's unexpected support for cannabis legalization has become a surprising focal point in the 2024 election. His endorsement in Florida may be part of a larger strategy to sway critical swing states like Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, where cannabis reform is gaining significant voter backing.

By aligning himself with this bipartisan issue, Trump is gambling on winning over undecided, young, and moderate voters in states where he and Vice President Kamala Harris are neck-and-neck in the polls.

Voter Support For Cannabis Reform In Battleground States

Recent polling shows that between 60% and 65% of voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin back adult-use legalization. This shift in public opinion likely prompted Trump to embrace cannabis reform, especially given the tight races in these states. Meanwhile, Harris supports cannabis decriminalization, citing her broader criminal justice reform agenda as key.

Close Polling In Key States

In Arizona, Trump holds a narrow lead over Harris, polling at 49% to her 44%. Pennsylvania is essentially tied, with Trump at 49% and Harris at 48%. Similarly, Wisconsin is too close to call, with both candidates polling around 47%. Harris leads by a small margin in Michigan, 47% to Trump's 46%.

In Arizona, the GOP largely supports the state's existing recreational marijuana laws, which have been in place since voters passed legalization in 2020. However, Republican lawmakers have refrained from pushing for further expansion or reforms, preferring to leave the issue as settled.

In Pennsylvania, the GOP remains resistant to full legalization, focusing primarily on medical marijuana, despite increasing public support for broader legalization. Wisconsin’s GOP recently introduced a proposal for a limited medical marijuana program, reflecting cautious steps toward reform while resisting full recreational legalization

In Michigan, where recreational cannabis is legal, Republicans have shown concern about regulatory issues but have largely refrained from pushing back against the existing legal framework.

Cannabis Reform: A Bipartisan Shift?

Trump's support for cannabis legalization in Florida signals a growing bipartisan consensus on marijuana reform. His endorsement of Florida’s Amendment 3 reflects a broader political realignment. Trump’s stance could influence other Republican officials to follow suit. Cannabis reform, once seen as a progressive issue, is now gaining traction among conservative voters, and Trump's shift may encourage Republicans in Congress to reconsider their stance on the issue.

National Polling Reflects A Tight Race

A RealClearPolitics average from late August to early September shows Harris leading by just 1.1 percentage points, with 48.4% to Trump's 47.3%. Polls such as Morning Consult, Emerson, and Quinnipiac reflect similar trends, with Harris holding small leads in most surveys. However, certain polls, like the NY Times/Siena and Rasmussen Reports, show Trump leading by 1%, highlighting the race’s volatility and the potential for either candidate to pull ahead as Election Day approaches.
