US Stock Futures Up After News of bin Laden's Death; Dollar Rises

US stock futures are higher this morning, after President Barack Obama reported that Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, was killed in a US operation in Pakistan. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 83 points to 12,839.00 and futures on the S&P 500 stock index rose 8.30 points to 1,368.00. Nasdaq 100 futures surged 14.75 points to 2,415.50. US stock markets closed higher on Friday, with the Dow Jones industrial average gaining 0.37% to 12,810.54, the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index surging 0.23% to 1,363.61 and the NASDAQ composite index rising 0.04% to 2,873.54. Dish Network Corp DISH is estimated to post its Q1 earnings at $0.68 per share on revenue of $3.23 billion. Anadarko Petroleum Corporation APC is projected to report its Q1 EPS at $0.58 on revenue of $3.09 billion. Edison International EIX is projected to report its Q1 earnings at $0.63 per share on revenue of $3.13 billion. Hartford Financial Services Group Inc HIG is projected to report its Q1 EPS at $0.95 on revenue of $2.47 billion. Massey Energy Co MEE is estimated to post its Q1 EPS at $0.58 on revenue of $906.65 million. Humana Inc HUM is projected to report its Q1 EPS at $1.36 on revenue of $9.14 billion. Chesapeake Energy Corporation CHK is estimated to post its Q1 earnings at $0.70 per share on revenue of $2.68 billion. Marshall & Ilsley MI reported a Q1 loss at $142 million, or $0.27 per share, versus a loss of $140.5 million, or $0.27 per share, in the year-ago period. However, analysts were expecting a loss of $0.18 per share. The bank's net interest income dropped 13.9% to $352.1 million. Most Asian markets ended higher, with Japan's Nikkei Stock Average gaining 1.57%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 moving up 0.04%. India's Sensex dropped 0.60%. European markets were higher today. The STOXX Europe 600 Index has advanced 0.23%. Markets in China and Hong Kong were closed for a public holiday. The dollar index (DXY) surged to 73.124 from 72.969 in late North American trading on Friday. Crude-oil futures for June delivery dropped 1.2%, or $1.37, to $112.54 a barrel. Oil closed out last week at $113.93 a barrel on Friday. Silver futures dipped 8% to $44.720 an ounce. Gold futures for June delivery dropped 0.19% to $1,553.40. Read more from Benzinga's Markets.
