As Fortune reported at the time, China prohibited Tesla vehicles from entering the Beidaihe district for two months while the Communist Party held its annual summer retreat. Reuters also reported that some government-run businesses told their employees not to drive Teslas for the same reason. Tesla denied spying, and Elon Musk even threatened to shut the business down if it did. To resolve the issue, Tesla guaranteed that all data from cars in China will be held on local servers.
This was a big change from how China used to treat Tesla. In 2019, China made a special deal that allowed Tesla to build its Shanghai factory without teaming up with a Chinese company, which is usually required for foreign carmakers. Things are changing now, though. Early in 2025, Tesla&#8217;s January sales in China <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/02/43556649/tesla-drops-1-5-premarket-after-sales-of-china-made-evs-in-january-drop-11-5-yoy">fell by 11.5%</a>. Although factory upgrades and the Lunar New Year are partially to blame for the drop, local brands like <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/24/10/41150200/september-brings-new-records-for-chinese-ev-makers">BYD and NIO (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) are quickly catching up</a>.

Sales in Germany <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43534797/tesla-sales-drop-60-in-germany-are-elon-musks-politics-getting-in-the-way-of-ev-growth">fell by 60%</a> in January, France saw a 63% drop, and in the UK, Tesla sales went down by 8% even though electric car sales overall went up. In California, Tesla <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/25/02/43447273/tesla-sales-drop-12-in-california-is-elon-musks-support-for-donald-trump-hurting-ev-sales">sales dropped by 11.6%</a> last year, even though people are still buying electric cars at the same rate. Compared with 2023, the state saw 30,000 fewer Model 3 registrations. Although it performed better, the Model Y still lost almost 4,000 units.
One possible factor in Tesla's struggles? Musk's political involvement. His controversial actions, including his alleged illegal <a href="https://in.benzinga.com/news/25/02/43578729/court-halts-musks-doge-squad-from-gaining-access-to-treasury-payment-systems-a-risk-of-irreparable-harm">interference with the U.S. Treasury Department</a>, have drawn backlash. In Germany and the UK, Musk's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/01/43218481/elon-musks-shocking-remarks-to-far-right-german-party-too-much-focus-on-past-guilt">support for far-right political movements</a> has reportedly turned off many potential buyers.&nbsp;
According to the EV Politics Project, Tesla is losing support among its traditional base—urban, progressive-to-centrist EV buyers—faster than it is gaining new conservative supporters, who are generally less interested in EVs.

Shares of US-listed Chinese companies are trading higher amid a tech rally related to DeepSeek AI. Also, Baidu announced it plans to release an AI model this year.

NIO Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) stock is trading lower on Tuesday after BYD Auto announced plans to include self-driving technology <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/43620317">in its cars</a>.
The Details: According to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/02/11/byd-rolls-out-driver-assist-tech-for-evs-with-deepseeks-ai-help.html">CNBC</a>, BYD is working with DeepSeek to develop and launch its &#8220;DiPilot&#8221; assisted driving system. The technology will be available across its vehicle lineup, including a model priced at 69,800 yuan ($9,555).
The company mentioned that DeepSeek&#8217;s artificial intelligence model will be included in at least the more advanced version of the driver-assistance program. Driver assistance programs typically combine software, artificial intelligence and sensors to control the vehicle and reduce the need for human intervention.
BYD&#8217;s founder and chairman, Wang Chuanfu, stated during a China-focused launch event live streamed late Monday that advanced smart driving will soon be a standard safety feature, much like seatbelts and airbags.
BYD originally had a different view on integrating self-driving technology. In March 2023, the company told investors that determining liability for autonomous vehicles was challenging, but it also recognized the potential for improved safety in self-driving cars.
Nomura analysts said in a Tuesday note that BYD&#8217;s move to include advanced driver-assistance features in a vehicle priced under 70,000 yuan likely makes it the first automaker in China to do so.
NIO shares may be trading lower after BYD&#8217;s announcement, as investors may view it as a competitive threat, especially with the technology being included in more affordable models.

NIO Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) shares are trading lower in the premarket session on Tuesday despite a series of positive updates for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket" rel="noreferrer noopener">electric vehicle maker.</a>
The company&#8217;s founder, chairman, and CEO, William Li, reportedly emphasized key strategic goals during an internal meeting as NIO prepares for 2025, <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/02/11/nio-ceo-highlights-importance-of-sales-volume-cost-reduction-in-internal-meeting/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports </a>CnEV Post.
Li outlined three core visions for the company: doubling sales, achieving single-quarter profitability by the fourth quarter of 2025, and continuing to enhance systematic capabilities.
This meeting marked the company&#8217;s first quarterly gathering after celebrating its 10th anniversary.
Meanwhile, shares of other Chinese EV makers like XPeng Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) also fell on Tuesday.
The dip comes after Chinese EV giant&nbsp;BYD Co. The company reportedly saw a significant surge in its battery swap services, driven by the travel rush during the holiday period from Jan. 28 to Feb. 4, <a href="https://cnevpost.com/2025/02/07/nio-record-battery-swaps-chinese-new-year-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports </a>CnEV Post.
On Feb. 3, the company recorded 136,720 battery swap services in a single day, marking a notable peak in demand.
This followed a strong performance on Jan. 25, with 119,848 services in one day, showcasing the growing popularity of NIO&#8217;s battery swap technology.
NIO also reported strong vehicle deliveries for January 2025, with a 37.9% year-over-year increase<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/g43418737/nio-inc-provides-january-2025-delivery-update" rel="noreferrer noopener">, totaling 13,863 units</a>.
